Sure you can wear pants to a cocktail party but they should be very dressy - a free flowing pant or silk or satin with a nice sandal and a dressy blouse. Pin your hair up and wear some dangling earrings and your in.

Cocktail party wear is all about the dress.A party deserves a party dress. Don't wear a dress that you could wear every day. Although an alternative might be a dressy top and slacks.
