Decorated Tires and Foxes in Galleries, Oh My!

Decorated Tires and Foxes in Galleries, Oh My!

Postby JoLynne on Thu Jun 13, 2013 8:41 am

My mission yesterday was to get my 13-year-old unglued from her computer. But where to go? What to do? Well, it was pretty hot (a rarity so far this summer), so I thought something indoors in the air conditioning would be nice.

Movies are fun, but I wanted to move around, not sit and look at another screen. She likes art, so I suggested a trip to the Nelson-Atkins museum. And when we got there, I saw the banners and remembered I'd seen publicity for the current featured show, Frieda Kahlo, Diego Rievera and Masterpieces of Modern Mexico, so I purchased tickets. (If you take your kids, have them bring their student IDs, so they'll be sure to get the student price.) Admission to the rest of the museum is free.

Once inside, my daughter noticed a photography exhibit called Invented Worlds that she wanted to see, in addition to the Modern Mexico show.

Both were fascinating.

We spent all afternoon walking, examining the artwork (two of our favorites involved decorated tires and a fox locked in a gallery) and having a great time talking about that and other things. Sometimes with teens, it's difficult, but this was a relaxing, enjoyable afternoon when I got a glimpse of the lovely, intelligent young lady my daughter is becoming.

What are you and your kids up to this summer?

Ooh! That sounds like fun! Between work and summer school, June is not really all that exciting for us, but I am using this rare weekend off to take the kids to the zoo and maybe City Market.

July, after the boys come back from scout camp, we will probably spend some time at the pool and hopefully some more trips to the zoo. My girlfriend bought a Friends of the Zoo pass this year, so we want to get some use out of it.

Sounds like fun. I hope to visit there as well as window shop on the Plaza. We took a long weekend trip to the lake and have a family(about 30 of us) fishing trip planned for later in the summer. Looking forward to it!

I saw the Kahlo ad in yesterday's newspaper. How did you like it? That is on my to-do list. Thanks, too, for the student ID reminder.

My 13-year-old wasn't especially excited about the exhibit going in, but she became fascinated, and we had a good talk about it with her father over dinner. Liked it enough that we're planning to go back and take him. I think that -- although she enjoys art and the museum -- she just didn't know anything about Kahlo and Rivera, so didn't know what to look forward to. And there is so much more than their work ... many other artists represented in the exhibition.

I later heard that there were more artists than Kahlo & there wasn't a lot of Kahlo. I still am planning on going.
