My son is almost 10 and I'm still trying to hold on to his belief in Santa Claus. But I didn't ever do the Elf on a Shelf because he was so scared of puppets and clowns when he was little. In fact, he doesn't even like to be in a room where there are dolls. He says he feels like they won't quit staring at him!!
Be more concerned about your character than your reputation. Your reputation is what others perceive about you...your character is who you really are!

Fads come and go. This one has skipped our house.

The elf is not at our house for several reasons. Mostly, it just doesn't interest me or our kids. But I'm also a bit intimidated by all the clever elf antics I've seen posted on Facebook and Pinterest. Some moms go all out and I'm too disorganized to keep that up for a whole month. We've down played the whole Santa mythology at our house and moved towards a more Christ-centered celebration. The elf just doesn't fit in with our lifestyle.
[By the way, I'm not implying that the elf is somehow anti-Christian. If you are a Christian and have fun with the elf, I am not in any way criticizing you.]

He does visit us - in fact, this is his third year to visit. Most of the time, he has been up high, but has been known to visit several rooms in the house.
This year, Happy (our elf) has been found in some unexpected places. Last week, he was in Barbie's bathtub in the dream house, and one day, he was hanging upside down from the ceiling fan cord.
The kids have a lot of fun looking for him every morning.

Right, like I need one more thing to do over the holidays.
No, the elf is not in our house. My kids are too old for it, anyway, but I think this: Basically, if you ever had to make up an early morning cover story for why the Tooth Fairy didn't come last night- you probably shouldn't be buying into whatever it is that EOTS is selling because it will be a fail.

No-in fact, I only recently heard of it. My kids are too old, but I had a hard enough time keeping up with the tooth fairy, so this would have been overload.

Re: Mom2mom poll: Does the Elf on the Shelf come to your house?
When my husband was little, his grandma would get him an elf ornament every year. I have a small tree set up with all of the elves on it. One is big enough that we use him as our Elf On A Shelf. He just arrived yesterday for this Christmas and didn't move at all last night. Our elf is a little lazy.
I didn't jump on the band wagon of having him do different funny things each day. He just moves to different rooms to keep an eye on the boy. I just don't feel like doing that stuff every day!

Yep, we have an elf, Ireth, as part of our lead up to Christmas.
This is our second Christmas together. The kids (and I have 4, ranging in age from 10-16) enjoy the daily hunt to find her. We have fun with our elf (finding great places to hide is getting difficult). And along with our Hallmark countdown clock, it's just another fun way to count down the days to Christmas.
I wish we found this earlier (I read about it in an article 2 years ago in USA Today) cos this would have been more fun when they were really little.
