Mom2mom poll: How do you handle taxes in your house?
It's that time again...sifting through receipts and W-2 forms getting the taxes ready to go. Do you file your family taxes yourself? Or do you hire help for that? (Thanks to reader Cindy Rubaie for the poll question idea this week!)
Share your taxing method, read The Star's FYI section on Tuesday, Feb. 21, and check back often on mom2momkc.com to see how our mom2mom panel answered.
The question: How do you handle taxes in your house?
A. We do our own
B. We pay someone to do them

I answered that we pay someone to do them because the option I needed was not available. My 93-year-old grandma does our taxes, as well as the taxes of many members of my family. However, she enjoys doing it and has never asked for any payment. She is definitely well appreciated for her accounting skills.

I like to think that the average American should be able to do their own taxes. I also like to think that we are average...however we have found it more than worth it to pay someone to do them for us.

We do our home. Personal and business. DH really does it. Mostly on Turbo Tax. It does take a lot of time. I suppose it might be better to have someone do it but DH is to cheap to pay someone.

We did our taxes for many years. With both of us being self-employed, though, the returns eventually got complex enough that it actually saves us money if a CPA does them for us.

We always do our taxes ourself. With the online resources through our home town H&R Block, it is pretty simple, even with itemizing. If either of us were self employed, I'm sure we would hire an accounant.

My husband has done our taxes almost every year since we've been together. Briefly when his father worked for H&R Block, we went there but have since returned to doing it ourselves. The technology has gotten so good that it just makes sense.

We do our own because they're usually not complicated. If we have something new or unusual, we go to H.R. Block.

Re: Mom2mom poll: How do you handle taxes in your house?
When I lived in Kansas but worked in Missouri I paid to have them done. Doing the dual state thing always confused me. Once I moved my home sweet home to the Missouri side, I did my own for a couple of years, then I switched to the computer. So easy and error-free.

Re: Mom2mom poll: How do you handle taxes in your house?
There are more books and pages of info. on tax codes then how to be a better parent out there. I have to say that I have never read any books about what are the changes in taxes for this year to the next, but I can say that I have read books on how to be a good parent. So I choose to spend the time on doing what I am good at and let a CPA keep up with taxes. We pay every year to get them done.
