Super Stars!
They say that stars aren’t born every day-just ask any of those excited, expectant people that travel in droves to try out for “X-Factor” or “American Idol”. Tears of disappointment or words of frustration tumble out of people that fall short in the judges’ eyes. Great, big sighs of relief are heard as some carry on to the next level with their golden ticket. It is a party of emotions. For some, even if they didn’t make it, they smile with the satisfaction that they had the guts to try.
Courage takes us a long way-it can give us the armor to withstand the pain of rejection or the power to carry on to the finish line, whether we make it through first or last. There are no losers if you finish the race.
Television has left it to the world to decide who has talent. With the flip of the remote there are a slew of reality television shows that cater to most anyone. Week by week there are tears or smiles as talented people are voted off and on one show or the next. To judge or not to judge, we sit on our rumps and yay or nay some very talented and gutsy people. The morning news interviews those voted off, entertainment shows speculate and there are threads and threads of gossip on the social networking sites.
In my opinion, talent is relative and is dependent on my tastes du jour. I love heavy metal music-I know tons of people that despise it. On the other hand, most of the time country music makes my ears bleed, but I listen to it three mornings a week because a co-worker happens to like it. I can live with that. Hip-hop happens to make some people smile, as for me, a little alternative music revs me up through the afternoon slump.
As far as my family goes, I see talent in each one of my children. I attend games, plays and concerts to watch my children shine, yet as I sit in the audience I remember it isn’t a one player show- I get the bonus of experiencing and enjoying the talents of every single member of the band, the cast or the choir. Talent is everywhere!
Realizing and harnessing a talent, two, even five, takes a lot of work and perseverance. Sometimes it is trial and error. It takes encouragement from others, what we, as parents do-whether it is listening to out-of-tune instrument practices, driving to and from games and scrimmages, play practices or costume making. Parents are the channel in which our children go from “good” to “great”.
Talent doesn’t have to only be seen from the outside, but often lives inside. Some people are uniquely compassionate, giving of themselves in secrecy. Baking cookies for school lunches, knowing which shirt will make a teenage daughter go nuts with excitement or understanding that a certain little boy always feels better when you serve corndogs. No applause is needed; satisfaction comes from those everyday smiles and hugs.Super stars aren’t born every day, but stars live among us, they are everywhere. They need no judgment, only courage and encouragement to keep running the race, because their golden ticket is at the end of the finish line.
