Monday I saw the blur of yellow school busses driving down the road and I couldn’t help getting a bit excited. No, exuberant, because that meant in just two short days my kids would be hopping on one of those tubular vehicles and heading off to school and I would have a chance to regain some of the sanity that the summer had slowly sucked away.
Goodbye Summer-Hello School Year-your timing is impeccable.
While some of my friends were singing the I-don’t-want-the-summer-to-end blues, I was doing a happy dance. The carefree days of summer had ended for us and we had made our way into the sing-song I-am-so-bored whine. Miserable temperatures had stolen hours of outdoor play designed to wear out the most hyperactive child in my house and my vacation days designed to give us just one more day at the pool had run out.
Should I dare mention that all of my elegant fantasies of the kids helping me put my house in order had quickly diminished as I realized that they were not rallying to put much effort into the task and I wasn’t really pushing the issue. I am still not sure if I just resigned myself to the fact that it is easier to do those things myself or if the heat claimed me as a victim as well, but it doesn’t matter. Those are questions that I can leave unanswered.
Tuesday night eager boys helped me make school lunches and clothes were laid out in anticipation for the big day. Bedtime came easily for everyone. For me, sleep was riddled with dreams of my upcoming days off, kids at school, house quiet and I would have loads of time to get my weekly chores done.
Today is the third day of school, my second day home alone and everyone is happy. The people in my house thrive on routine, especially this parental unit. Operation Take Control of My House is still underway, after realizing that my dream of getting it done in two days isn’t realistic. The beauty of this is that I have two quiet days next week, and the next. Well, you get the picture.
The novelty will wear away and soon the kids will be wishing for a string of days off to mess around and play. But till then, this momma is happy-dancing her way through vacuumed carpets, clean bathrooms and the echo of the dogs playing in the quiet house.
School is a small price to pay to restore some sanity to this mom’s life.
