Today I have this great, big grin plastered on my face. It is the proudest-mama-ever smile I get to wear when I watch my kids jump hurdles, accomplish big things and make every new day a great one. Heck, most of the time the grin just stays put.
Just because I wear this grin, doesn’t mean I don’t worry about them. Sometimes they run into some tough times and we have to work together to get past those. This is where the challenge comes in. What do we have to do to find a solution? I have taught my family to ask if they need help and asking for help is never a sign of weakness.
During the last school year I noticed my son having a hard time connecting to his classmates. It was his first year of middle school anyways, an adjustment all in itself. This was different though. It doesn’t help that my young man kind of talks like a small adult. He always has. It started to bother him that his younger brother had more friends and more invites than he did and finally one day he said it. “I want some help.”
Some trips to our go-to counselor (the doctor of awesomeness, she has helped our family through many issues) helped my son find some real solutions. Helped him open up. He came home before the last day of sixth grade and said, “I want to join the cross country team.”
The first day of seventh grade has since started. He tried out and was chosen for the honors choir. He has stuck with cross country and also scored a part for the school musical. The coolest yet was the other day when he came home and said, “I am invited to go to a Back-To-School-Bash at my friend’s youth group.” He couldn’t pass that up.
He attended that party and has an open invitation to attend that weekly with his friend.
I see my son blossoming, growing and refusing to give up. He asked for help and we worked through the problem.
That smile will be hard to remove from my face.
