Most everyone knows that I am the oldest in my household. The only registered voter, legal adult beverage drinker and purveyor of the household wants and needs. I bring home the proverbial bacon. I am slave to the mortgage company so I can have the American dream, my own house. This house comes with all of the pain in the butt problems houses come with; broken appliances, basic upkeep and air conditioning problems in 100 degree heat.
Today I was told that I needed to change my air conditioner filter. I will admit right now that this is the one job that I utterly hate. I spent the last three hours of my work day fretting over this seemingly mundane task. Except it isn’t. My HVAC system is in my crawlspace. I hate that place.
I went home, took a nap, ate dinner and convinced my teenage daughter to go down with me. I needed help holding the flashlight. It was more like I needed moral support. That beautiful daughter of mine was with me every step of the way.
All of this stress over a stupid filter made me wish I had that significant other at home to take care of the honey-do list. A spouse to kill the spiders. To grill the burgers and hopefully not char them like I do.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a guy there to bring home a little extra bacon when it just doesn’t seem to stretch? Don’t even get me going with the carpool. I may not be able to touch my toes, but I can practically stretch to the ends of the earth and back in a day flat. Lawn care I would gladly share.
Simple things, like holding hands, hugs and words of encouragement are the things I would cherish the most. In my former marriage my spouse would always say, “You are the best d*#n cook ever!” Believe me, it was a lie, but the most wonderful lie ever.
Here I sit, air conditioner mended, with a list of things I need to do to improve my house and it’s air flow, with the understanding that I have to change my air filter more often. More important though, is the knowledge that I can do it, with the bravery to get it done, and the kids to help me along. Moral support included.
