Disclaimer: I should not be confused with someone that might be funny, I am not a comedian. Though I try to be. All of the time. Ask the kids.
Here is a riddle: I rule the world. Some people worry about me. Some people hate me. I define people. I am infinite. What am I?
The answer is…NUMBERS.
Who can’t relate to hating the number on the scale or worrying about the numbers in the checkbook? We hear over and over how much debt we are in, how much that country owes this country or how much we have sent to help another. The numbers are enormous and the stakes are even higher. I love it when the kids ask what the last number is. What do you say? I wish my bank account was like that—never ending.
I will be the first one to admit that numbers define who I am in many ways. Here is a snapshot of my life…by the numbers.
I have one cat, one dog and more animal hair in my house than one should ever have. I need two vacuums, a spare in case one breaks. But no, instead I just wait until cat-astrophe strikes.
There are two cars, one of which my oldest drives. I lust after that car and the nice gas mileage it gets. When I leave for work in the morning I hesitate next to it, leaning back and forth, wavering like a weak magnet, wishing I could just jump in there and drive away. I dream about the smallish car I am going to get when I have fewer kids in the house. I like my minivan, but…
Three must-see television shows. “Criminal Minds” “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” and “Bones”. I am an unapologetic, who dun nit watcher.
I have four terrific kids, for which I have infinite amounts of love for. They are growing up at the speed of light, though, which drives me crazy! My oldest will graduate next year and enter college-dom, with her younger sister not too far behind her. My sons have left primary education for the riveting, hormonal years of middle school, leaving mom with a bag of very mixed emotions. I am happy they are growing up and turning out to be wonderful adolescents, yet sad that they are not kids. Anymore.
Six years I was married and almost ten since I have been divorced. A dream, turned into a nightmare that turned into another dream all with exceptional life lessons learned about priorities, personal growth and moving on.
I have been at the same job for eleven years. God willing, I can make this last for many, many more.
Thirty-nine years and counting is who I am, waiting for the next chapter. Scared of what is to come? Not as much as I thought I would be. I have a number of tools to use to help me live and wonderful people in my life to enjoy it with. I work a great job to help with the numbers in the bank account and depend on one Spirit to help guide me through it. You can bet no matter how scary the next numbers could be, I am excited about what they might bring.
