Women’s History Month is coming to an end, but should one stop thinking of the smart, powerful women that make this world go round just because the month of April is upon us? I certainly can not. So many women have worked hard to pave the way to help keep us from being the shadow behind the men standing before us. Today women buy houses, vote, are CEO’s of companies and are major political leaders. We can thank those women before us that had to fight for our right to do these things, applaud the women around us that continue to make progress and pray for the women ahead of us that will need our inspiration to move forward.
I have the task to decide what woman has inspired me the most in my life. What a tough decision, because there are so many women, past and present, that fit this bill. As I look back on my life there has been a woman somewhere that has made me raise my eyebrows and help me to be aware. They have guided me to make wise decisions and led me to open my mind to the unknown. There has been a woman with me to share my joys and tears. These women are not only family members but also people that walked around me in all aspects of my life.
There is the woman that I work with who is an Electronics Technician. She works in a place that tends to be a “man’s world” but she can go head to head with them anytime. She has worked hard to get where she is and is so open-minded. She inspires me to try to hone the skills I have, just as she continually works to improve her electronic skills.
There is the author that I know who wrote her first best seller a couple of years ago. She amazes me with her writing ability. She worked a job she didn’t really like, decided to take a leap of faith and quit to write and raise her family, to do things that she really did enjoy. Her success didn’t happen overnight but she was persistent. She has the ability to write many different genres, including humor and poignant young adult books. She speaks out about bullying, which is a subject dear to her heart. She is an inspiration not only to me but many others that I know.
A woman I know raised her daughter on her own, many years ago. She worked so hard with such a strong work ethic. Her daughter is grown now, with grown children of her own. The woman was so proud of her. I think of her a lot because she always encouraged me.
I know a “chick” that is making a lot of changes in her life. She has spent many years at home being what I think could be called a CEO, for lack of a better word. Her kids are all in school now and she feels the desire to branch out. She is spreading knowledge across the web about women in history, while having fun and is having much success at it. She is writing and she rocks it. The inspiration I get from her is that she puts herself out there and tries and she always gives one-hundred and ten percent.
I know many women who have opened their own businesses. They have taken their passions and dreams and tried to pass those on to others. Some bake wonderful pastries and cakes, others clean houses and there are some who do taxes. I have known women who have shared their love of children by opening home-based child care centers. Who could not be inspired by someone who takes such financial stakes to share their dreams?I just have to go to work and walk around and there is a woman there with some inspiration ready to share. Everyone has a story, including the woman going back to school to better her career. How about the women who have been married 25 or more years, which can be such a feat in this world today. A young newlywed girl who is working so hard to make the first days of marriage just right can be so inspiring to the newly engaged woman is preparing to be married. The widowed woman who is longing for the company of her dear husband or the single or divorced mom who struggles with the day to day duties of life but hugs her children tight, with so much love to share.
I will not deny the obvious sources of political inspiration; Hillary Clinton and Condoleeza Rice come to my mind. I won’t discount that historically, women like Clara Barton, Susan B. Anthony and even Joan of Arc bring great emotion to me when I think of them. There are so many famous women, trailblazers of their time who have made us who we are today. Yet it is the gentle roar of the women all around me that inspire me to be the best that I can be.
I roar your screen name every time I read it (Tony the Tiger style). You're on my list of inspirational women!
