Words. They are so powerful. Whether they are written or spoken, they can make or break a person. Words, carefully chosen, can carry an idea. Words, thoughtfully spoken, can convey love. Some words, when pulled from the depths confusion or anger, can sow seeds of hate and contempt. As much as I try to think before I speak, I fall short. Today though, the thought that comes to my mind, what if the words I am speaking right this second, the last ones I am going to say?
I found out today that one of my co-workers passed away unexpectedly. The last time I saw him was last week. I knew he was going to be gone for several weeks, maybe for good (a quiet retirement). Before I left to go home that day, I said to him in my squeaky, near-gone voice, “I wish you well.” He smiled in response, with a quiet “Thank you.” I didn’t say much more, because I couldn’t get much more out. What I wouldn’t do to go back and say more. “Thank you for passing through my life” or “Thank you for what you have taught me.” He did teach me a lot. He taught me how to look up parts, cross reference fuses, measure motorized rollers and so much more. He taught me that it didn’t really matter what kind of wine you drink with steak as long as you like it. My life was richer because I knew him but I never really said it.
While I can’t go back and change what I said, I can make my words count now. When my daughter gets in the car to drive to school tomorrow, I can tell her I love her and to drive safe. When I teach my Grace to drive I can try to be as encouraging as possible, no matter how scared I am. I can give my sons an extra kiss before they leave for the bus. We can take to heart the “don’t go to bed mad” theory. I would hate to think that my last words would be those of frustration. Besides, isn’t it nice to go about our days and drift off to sleep with happy words lodged in our heads. I know for me it is.
The people in my life, whether they are my family or from work or play, deserve my carefully chosen words, because all of those words count. Every single one of them.
Oh! sad but lovely...what a great message. You really spoke with your heart and I also am glad that you have passed- although not past tense- through my life.I had a friend pass away right before Christmas. I had just been thinking of her earlier in the week and wondering if she would come to dinner. Life got in the way and I never made the call. You don't get do-overs, but you can learn (as you have) to change your behavior and cherish others with each day that passes. I definitely learned that lesson as well...but I can't help wishing I had made that call. Thanks for sharing.
