It was a rare day , a holiday to be exact, where all of us were home together. With no prior commitments, time was on our side. This day was charmed! Since the weather didn’t scream, “Go play outside!” I had to come up with something to do. The wheels in my head turned and one word screamed out. Scrabble! Taking a recently purchased game and mixing it with the old one we already had, all five of us hunkered down on the floor, ready to match wits.
The game was on and you could almost hear the click, click of the minds at work, coming up with good words..no, great words. We couldn’t help but to lend a hand to the youngest, who tried his hardest. It was no surprise when my spelling-challenged daughter kept trying to pull some fast ones on us. Telly, Tellie, Tellee? It was a no go. The musical sound of laughter filled my house when my son asked, “Can I just spell it N-A-V-E-E just this once?” Who wouldn’t try to put the word “Hurt” in front of the word “Calf”? It made perfect sense to my ten year old.
My family ended up being pretty creative under pressure and in the end my twelve year old beat the pants off of us. We had so much fun.
I have to enjoy these moments because right now my oldest is looking at colleges. Band rules our lives in the fall and Scouts keeps us busy all year. The days we are all together, for that amount of time, are fewer than they used to be. I plan on holding on to our Scrabble days, our charades days, whatever we come up with when we hang out together. The memories will be sweet!
