The new year is riding our heels and it only seems like yesterday that we were huddled in our homes, freezing, waiting to ring in 2010. Time moves oh-so-fast! Now, I am sitting here, chilling with the kiddos that aren’t out working or staying with friends, fighting off some viral, voice-minimizing sickness. It isn’t looking likely that I will be singing Auld Lang Syne Friday night.
If I can’t talk, I might as well think about the coming year. What I can do or not do with it. I am not much a resolution maker, mostly because I am not a resolution keeper. I spend my working days making goals for myself and making lots of lists. I keep those because I want to bring home the bacon. But when I start to make goals to keep at the beginning of the year, I freak out. There isn’t the “boss” to be accountable to. Just me, to disappoint. Funny thing is that even though I don’t set out to accomplish anything at the beginning of the year, I always leave the old having learned. A lot.
A couple of years ago I took the big leap and became a home owner instead of a home renter. I certainly didn’t go into 2008 thinking that was even possible but after it happened I couldn’t believe I hadn’t done it sooner. In 2009 I took the kids camping, by myself, for the first time ever. I also took a leap to meet some of the moms from mom2mom. Terrifying because I am painfully shy, but I have met some awesome people. Now, I am leaving 2010 and it has been an incredible year. In January I flew to Florida to go on a trip of a lifetime with my family. I am terrified to fly and I didn’t let my fear keep me from doing something. That is SO big. I managed to surprise my mom with a 60th birthday bash which included a visit from her brother. I watched my daughter turn 16 and take off with the keys to the car, driving to her first job. I was a marching band mom, Cub Scout mom and watched my oldest son ride off to Boy Scout Camp, trying to hide the tears, because gosh, he had never been gone from home for 10 days.
So here it is, just three days away from 2011. No, I am not going to start a new trend a make resolutions, but this is what I want to do. I want to keep my eyes open and look all around me. I want to see the possibilities that abound. I want to see that bump in the road ahead of me, so maybe I can jump the hurdle instead of trip over it. I want to see the lessons around me that are there for me to learn from. I want to keep my ears open. I want to hear the joy, the hurt and the desires. I want to hear the music. I want to keep my heart open. I realize in doing this that it might get hurt every once in awhile. In keeping it shielded, there is no growth and yes, I want to grow. I want to reach my heart and my hand out and see what happens.
Happy 2011. May everyone’s dreams for the new year come true!
Great blog, Susan! I love how you listed out your accomplishments from 2010, and I like your "goals" for 2011! I wish everyone had the same attitude! You should add to your goal list something to do with writing. You do it very well. I always hear your voice when I read what you've written!
