Recently I was visiting the site where I write sometimes and the question that was posed for the day’s Writer’s Block was “Have you ever had a moment, an hour, or a day that renewed your faith in the fundamental goodness of humankind?” With interest I read answers from some of the writers on the site. I was intrigued by the fact that there were quite a few members who answered “NO” to the question.
For myself, the answer to this question is a resounding yes. Sometimes it does seem like there is a lot of negative going on out there in the world but if I open my eyes wide enough and take it all in, I can find something. Sometimes, it is watching my child hold the door for someone at the store and saying “You’re welcome sir.” Other times it might be a story on the news, especially the ones about the Young Achiever of the Week. Teens that are going above and beyond only because they want to and not for fame or fortune.
Recently my daughter had surgery at Children’s Mercy, something very routine. While I waited I was taken to the Ronald McDonald Room. There they had a television, some magazines, comfy places to sit and a phone. At lunch and dinner times, during the week, volunteers from various organizations come and prepare a meal for those parents staying with their kids in the hospital. It isn’t fancy, but it sure beats going out to eat fast food. It meant a lot to me for the couple of days we were there and I can only imagine what it means for those that are there for days on end. This gives me lots of faith in humanity.
My favorite radio station makes wishes come true at Christmas for those who are in need. Not so much by giving out of their pockets, but also by getting their listeners involved too. I spend many trips to work in the morning in tears listening to the goodness of the people in this great city I live in.
I know there are awful things going on out there. I am no fool. I watch the news and read the paper everyday. But gosh, if I give up on the good that can be found out there then what do I have to look forward to?
I hope everything is okay your girl. I remember passing the Ronald MacDonald several times when Blake was receiving treatment for his ITP. There were a lot of parents who didn't look like they slept for days. All I had to do was look around and any self pity I had would quickly disappear. The staff and volunteers were such an asset to both the patients and their families. I believe there true angels that work at that hospital. The staff and volunteers are wonderful. Good people do exist.
