My daughter, Taylor, turned 15 on Shrove Tuesday. Finally, she can get her learner's permit. The only snag is that we are waiting for her birth certificate to come from Topeka, because in Missouri they want that special piece of paper before they will issue your liscense to you. Special means special too, has to be the right size, the right shape, the right seal. I am surprised they don't seal the deal with blood. When my daughter was born, my mom sent for her birth certificate for me. They offer birth certicate cards, smaller. They are cute but useless. You can't use them at the drivers liscense bureau or to get a passport. The first time I sent the paperwork to Topeka to get a replacement, I didn't get the paperwork right, so they sent it back. This could take awhile. You can order it online, but it cost threee time the money with processing fees. No, I will pay for a stamp.
Wednesday the girls had orthodontist appointments and afterwards we went for ice cream. We were in a nice empty parking lot and I thought heck, I will let her practice a little bit. I feel kind of bad I haven't come through with the permit yet. So, I let her get in the driver's seat. I guess I don't remember my first time. At all. I feel like I have just known how to drive. I do remember learing how to drive a stick, but that was different. I drive a conventional mini van, nothing different or fancy here.
Yikes...I am a terrible passenger anyways, always. I am either going to be a worse one by the time I am done with all of my children or a pro. We circled the parking lot maybe 6 times. Foot on gas, lurch forward, swerve a little too far to the left, whiplash when she stopped. She heard me say "Turn left! Slow down! Watch that car! Get on the right side! " AAAAAH! My A math student parked in 2 1/2 parkiing spaces, do the math please. She literally has never moved anything with a motor except a lawn mower and not the riding variety. I guess it shouldn't surprise me. I know she will get better, she has good head on her shoulders. We just have to practice and practice. Before she gets on the road.
As for now, I am wondering what it would cost to get one of those passenger seat brakes installed in my van. Four kids, four permits, I think I could get some use out of it.
I had to learn on a stick. My mom was so mean about it we set at one stop sign for 45 minutes because it was headed up hill and I just couldn't get it! (We were on a gravel road in the country with no traffic.) But I finally got it and learned not to stop on a hill if you could avoid it!!!I taught my boys how to drive, one of them I taught how to drive a stick( he chased the horses all over the pasture in my old Festiva) DD.....her Dad is gonna teach her if I have to hold a gun to his head! I just don't have the nerves for it anymore!I taught my 3 oldest and they, in turn, taught the 2 youngest. My stepfather taught me & after he taught me he took me out in the country(Raytown, Grandview,Belton all faming communities then) got out told me to drive us home! It took me almost 3 hrs to find my way home! I'm glad he did, it's very seldom I get lost. I did my kids the same way - it makes you look for landmarks in unfamilar places.
