Monday night I took my daughter Taylor, who will be turning 15 next week, out with my ex husbands stepmom. My DD is quite the character, a chic with her own style. She dresses with a goth/emo flair, but do not call her either one of those titles. She has dyed black hair that she is trying to grow out b/c she wants to go to her natural color (then she will probably dye it again, hopefully not so black). She wears intense eyeliner and carefully applies her makeup and like a mom I have to remind her everyone once in a while to not go so dark (I am probably just a little jealous because any eyeliner makes my eyes water). She has a funky style (probably not a cool word, but the only one I know) and she works hard to get it right, though she does "let it go" everyone now and then. The thing I find funny about her though is that she likes movies that are so retro. The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Edward Scissorhands..all the movies I loved as a teen.
The Coterie is has a special series they are doing called the Coterie at Night. It shows on Mondays at the Westport Coffeehouse and lo and behold, right now they are showing the Breakfast Club Live! As soon as I found out, I bought tickets and planned a little girls outing for her birthday. She loves the theatre and she loves this movie. Our little excursion took us first to the Jerusalem Cafe. She is a vegetarian and I thought this would be perfect. She loved the Vegetarian Lasagna she ordered and I tried Mousaka for the first time..Yummy! A little shopping trip to the Bunker proved fun for her, where she purchased some "Ugly Dolls" (I can't even begin to explain them, they are interesting). Then off to the Westport Coffeehouse.
We took some coffe and hot chocolate down to our seats and the show began. It was a trip down memory lane and in more ways than one. It occurred to me why the movie was so popular, then and now. It encompassed how I felt during high school back then and surely how my daughter feels now. It was a great performance, though not for young ones, it is great for the older teen crowd and adults. It couldn't have been a better cast and it was a dynamic show. Later, they let us leave our graffitti on the desks of the set...mine said "Thank you for the trip down memory lane..Sue Mack"
My daughter talked and smiled the whole way home. I definetely think it made her day. I know it made mine. Though sometimes I feel like her and I are worlds apart, we are more alike than we understand today.
