All the doors are locked. One is double-locked. The phones are up so high my mother can’t even reach them.
And now we’re debating about the windows. Are we sure the locks work? Are we sure they’re young genius proof? (I say genius, not in the mensa sense of the word but in the sense that this kid can figure out just about anything as long as it means he can run free or hear someone’s voice on the other end of a phone.)
Maybe we need to just resign ourselves that if we’re not outside we need to barricade ourselves inside with any form of communication way out of the reach of anyone shorter than 5 feet, 5 inches.
The first 911 call was understandable and even forgivable. After all, the 911 people called back, and it was all sorted out amicably over the phone and no harm done, right?
But two 911 calls in a few month’s time isn’t quite as funny, and when the cops come to your house it’s a different story. It’s also a different story when your lovely toddler somehow manages to get out of a locked door (or a door you were just sure was locked) and run to the end of the driveway at the edge of the street before the dog barks likes crazy alerting the whole house something is terribly wrong.
Are you sensing a trend here? Let’s just say I bought a couple boxes of hair dye at the store.
On the 911 call, the one that preceded a visit from Olathe police, I was out of town for work so I’m off the hook for this one. (Maybe. At least I like to see it that way.)
But my husband and I were on the phone and we thought it’d be cute to give it to our youngest. He’s at the age where he seems to appreciate that it’s mommy’s voice coming out of the phone, though we’re not quite sure whether he understands that it’s mommy talking to him or more like just a recording that sounds like mommy, kind of like his Elmo radio.
Well, we chatted and I got back on the road. Husband hung up the phone but little one still had a receiver in his hand. Within a minute or two, my husband grabs the phone and doesn’t think anything of it, until a knock on the door.
You can just imagine the look the cop gave him when he blamed the whole mishap on a cute little toddler having a snack.
The look was similar to the one a couple of ladies gave him last week when our toddler escaped out the front door, the same door with a stubborn door knob my 61-year-old mother has trouble successfully using. The walking ladies just looked at our toddler and said, “Is this your baby?” (For the record, he escaped another time when I was watching him.)
Or sure, we’re doing the no-no and trying to watch his every move. But he’s fast. He’s quiet and fast. When my oldest was this age, we only had to worry about him biting furniture and sometimes other kids. No cops, though. No escapes and mad dashes to the streets.
I know you’re saying to yourself, this too shall pass. But when? In the meantime, we have all the doors locked and if you call, it may take awhile to get to the phone.
Two out of my three called 9-1-1 on various occasions. We've had the police come here as well. Not funny. But, yeah... kind of funny. Did the dog get a very special treat, by the way, for his rescue-bark?My son was a flight risk until he turned about 3. He would just GO, and if he saw me coming, he'd go faster. I had to get him one of those leashes - best $7 I ever spent. I couldn't trust him for 30 seconds, and I had to be ready to pounce at all times. He was completely unwilling to do anything allowed - nothing held his interest unless it was completely off limits. Yes, this will pass, but you'll need many more of those boxes of hair dye.I agree about the leash. My little kiddo was a "bolter". Parking lot, grocery store....ANYWHERE. And when he took off, it wasn't down the sidewalk, it was down the middle of the street. We had to stop the visits with nana, because she always took them shopping to someplace with a very active parking lot. She would get him out of his carseat, and he was off and running. Big brother had to chase after him through rows of cars coming and going. SCARY!!!!What a crack up (because no one got hurt.) I'm not sure if this helps you feel like you're not alone, or if it will panic you but I saw a You Tube video of a kid (prob. 3? who was trying to unlock a chain lock by climbing the outside of his staircase and stretching his toe to slide the lock. Here's the link if it works: (If not, just look up escaping toddler in You Tube and LOTS come up!) http://youtube.com/watch?v=6eu2mMRMCnM
