Mother’s Day was halfway over and my oldest was desperate. He kept walking around the house telling me he hadn’t done enough for me all day and wanted to help. In fact, he walked in my shadow for 30 minutes pleading, ‘What can I do? What can I do?”
Dinner, he said. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure grilled hamburgers, homemade onion rings and sautéed brussell sprouts should be left in the hands of a fifth-grader. Call me crazy.
Well, then, he asked, how about finishing the cake? Not so fast I said, as he eyed the fudge frosting and two 9-inch cakes cooling on the counter.
“What’s left, then?” he said
“All I have left to do is the blog,” I said, thinking he would see this as his license to run off and play a little Mario Galaxy.
“OK, I’ll do that. … Can I really write the whole thing?”
So that’s my way of telling you the next part of this entry is from my lovely son. (I know, I’m a little nervous too.) As he typed at the kitchen counter, his 21-month-old brother was running through the house licking the cake beaters. Couldn’t have asked for a better Mother’s Day. And now, (dare I even write the words) here’s what my oldest son has to say on this day dedicated to all the moms of the world.
Throughout this Mother’s Day I didn’t think I did enough to help my mom. Right now she’s cooking dinner! (Editor’s note: my mom and mother-in-law were here for Mother’s Day, so some mother had to help cook, right? Husband was helping.) If I was her I would sit on the couch eating corn chips and make my son get me some ice cream.
And don’t look now but she’ s giving the baby a bath, she works way too hard. Although without her we would have broken windows, oven on fire, and no food. That’s why it’s good to have my mom. She’s the best.
When it was just me and her she helped me a lot. You try raising a 7 -year-old kid by yourself. … Oh and there she is folks still cooking . If she keeps this up I’ll have to grab a straight jacket. To save her more work I’m doing this blog. She said I could say anything I wanted about how she is as a mother. She said it's like how her boss gives her a review every year. All right!!!
1) She doesn’t favor me or my little brother. She loves us both the same. (I like this one!)
2) She cooks well. I like her Heath bar dessert. (OK. I added the Heath bar dessert part to fill this out a little bit. The boy’s not one for details. But, it is pretty good.)3) Sometimes she does compare me to Jeff (step-dad). She‘ll tell me, “Jeff never got upset at his mom growing up, and he still hugs her all the time. …” (Upon him telling me this I realized it was true. And I have to admit that half the things I say Jeff did I don’t know if they’re true or not. But they always sound good. So, note to self, no more doing this.)4) She buys me good clothes. She used to buy me clothes that were too fancy, now she also buys me T-shirts with cool sayings or pictures of guitars and stuff. (Anybody need some “nerdy” polo shirts?)5) And there is one more kind of bad thing. Mom, please, quit trying to feed me cottage cheese!
Well, there you have it. Oldest son got a little tired. No ending. No touchy feely comments You can’t blame the kid, it was getting late and he still hadn’t had his supper.
Plus, with five things listed on the evaluation Mom was sitting at 3 - 2. (I won't beat myself up for the cottage cheese though, at least I'm trying to push the health.) Overall, not bad for my first mother evaluation. I think I'm liking the idea of these. Shouldn't we be evaluated on the most important job we do?
Now, if we could just discuss me getting a raise …
Awww, how cute is he!? Looks to me like the writing talent doesn't fall far from the tree. Tell him I think he's got a great gift for words. And if he were my son I'd be very very proud of him. What a sweetie! So sweet. My favorite gift was a card where DD wrote a whole paragraph about me. It started with "You are the winner of my heart." I cried! It is nice to hear what they really think, isn't it?very sweet! I love that he recognized the challenges of single motherhood. I don't know how single moms do it. Apparently he'd like to not have to deal with cottage cheese, though?Great kid you have there! I got a homemade Mother's Day card from one of my son's friends (he's 16), complete with misspellings and a cheesy little drawing of "Mommy" and "Me." Brought tears to my eyes and made me realize that even if my own kids don't appreciate me (and of course they do), there are kids who do!So, what does your kid really think about you? At this point I don't really want to know. Thought your kids blog was heartwarming. Should be a weekly thing. Open a kids2mom blog on here. Might be scarey, but could help us be better moms. I could sure use the help. What an amazing kid! That is the most fantastic Mother's Day present ever. And he doesn't even know it. I remember my mom saying the little things I'd write or make were the most precious, but I never believed her. Now I get it. You are very lucky to have a son who recognizes so much of what you do AND can write!
