I’m not a really good swimmer. That much I’m OK with.
I’m also one of those paranoid moms who thinks anytime her kid gets near the deep end, he'll be needing CPR in a few minutes. And, well, I’m OK with that, too - I just yell, “honey be careful,” a few dozen more times than I should.
But here’s what I’m not OK with - the whole swimsuit part of swimming.
Why do they have to show so much of our skin? And the skin we’re not very fond of?
I like to think I’ve got decent arms, so the top’s not so bad. My feet are OK and the calves aren’t half bad.
It’s the knee up to the lower waist where I have all the problems. (I think I just saw a few heads nodding.)
Let me swim in my capris. Or maybe even a light-colored leotard that fits a little loose. I’d even go for a flowing skirt (if it clings to my thighs when I get out of the water, at least you won’t be able to see the actual skin, just the outline.)
I know, all women have a problem with swimsuits. But I’m going to venture to say my problem is a tad worse.
You see, it’s not easy to be fairly thin on top and not so fortunate on the bottom.
I’d so much rather be heavier all over (no, I’m serious). A least people would know what’s coming.
But with me, a size 8/10 on top and a (yeah, like I’m really go to write that here) on bottom, it’s like I’m false advertising. When I’m clad in my swimsuit, I’ve actually seen people look at me in the face, smile nice and hearty and then as their eyes go down, it’s as if I hear them say to themselves “oh my.”
I’ve declared this summer will be different. Now that I have two sons who love the water I don’t want to forever be the mom who keeps her shorts on until the time she jumps in the water and then has a little freak out as she tries to work up the courage to take them off. (What I’m saying here is, I’ve never quite made it to the taking-off-the-shorts part.)
Not anymore. I will wear a swimsuit this year. I will actually swim in it. I won’t hide behind a pair of loose-fitting shorts, preferably dark in color to make myself look a little thinner.
Two weeks ago my husband and I took our "before" pictures in our most recent swimming attire. I measured every part of my body, and let’s just say there’s a reason people say a tape measure is a big motivator. I think my waist in high school was as big as one of my thighs. My "before" shot could scare small children.
Yet, I forge on. The way I figure it, I have about 50 days to tuck, trim and tone.
I thought about buying my dream swimsuit now, taking a photo of my sons holding it and keeping it on my treadmill for inspiration. But then I worried I may be out about 80 or so bucks. Yes, I know, bad karma and a defeatist attitude wrapped in one.
For now, my goal is exercise. And trying not to curse as I get the tape measure out each week.
Man, sometimes I wish my boys didn’t love the water.
Right there with ya' sister!! My problem tho' is from my stomach down, including my road-mapped legs!! Dang, pregnancy with twins can really do a number on the body!!LOL -- okay, as someone who is fat all over, I often find myself wishing I had a small top half and a big bottom half, because then at least ONE half of me would look good in a swimsuit. And if I could just find one swimsuit that would cover the boob area nicely, that would be a miracle (for me, and for all those moms at the pool who have to shield their young sons' eyes when I take my shirt off). Sigh...okay, now I'm depressed.I'm just the oppsite, kinda busty, with a belly to match, then zilch--nothing. Flat butt, If it fits on top, it bags on the butt. But I found those 2 piece with the tops that looks like a shirt and shorts for the bottom are a great cover-up, plus you can buy each piece seperatly. : )I got the swimsuit from JCPenney that is a two piece tank with either a skirt or shorts to match. I got the shorts of course! I'm built the same as you. After I've had a baby, I'm REALLY funny looking cause I gain a LOT of weight and most of it is thighs and butt. I totally hear you sister! That reminds me of a funny story. Our church was having a womens retreat at a hotel one time, and they reminded everyone to bring their swimming suits cause there would be a pool and hot tub. An elderly woman spoke up and said she wouldn't be able to swim this year cause her swimming suit had a hole in the knee! It was hysterical...but at the same time everyone was silently wondering if they could bring that style back in!
