Oh sure, it’s happened before. Like when he didn’t want me to walk him to his classroom anymore. Or hold his hand on a walk. And then there was the whole, “no, I’ll read myself a book tonight.” (For the record, I’m talking about our teen-ager, not our first-grader.)
So you may say I’m used to it. That I’ve faced it over and over and over again. It’s always been good. A sign that he’s going into another phase, and he’s maturing.
But this time? It hit a little harder.
It’s really quite silly on my part. I admit it. I mean, how many 16 year olds still let their moms buy their clothes? And when I say buy, I really mean pick out.
When he was in elementary school, all I had to do was buy clothes on sale, make sure they were some sort of blue or black, with some red and maybe white. He’d wear jeans or sweats, sweaters or T-shirts. Never mattered. Sometimes he’d say he dressed up for school more than the other kids, but he just shrugged his shoulders. That’s when I’d throw in some T-shirt days for good measure.
Buying and picking out his clothes was fun. Made me feel like I was still a part of his day, even when I was at work. He wore everything. Loved that he didn’t have to shop himself.
Until a couple of weeks ago.
“Can I go shopping with you?”
Uh, sure. “Really?”
Seems he has a new style that I wasn’t quite sure of.
So we shopped. For two or three hours. He picked. I watched. Sometimes I’d hold up a shirt, one that matched the style I’ve been buying him for years, and he’d just shake his head.
“I don’t like that look anymore,” he’d say. Or I’d get a “That’s really not me.”
Nice.
I did discover my boy who I’ve always thought was the least pickiest teen alive is extremely choosy. We only came away with two pair of jeans, two shirts and a hoody.
“Sure, you don’t want anything else?”
Nope, he said. “I’m good.”
Just last night he tells me he’s been thinking about some other stores he’d like to go to. They’re more his style.
Yep, he’s outgrowing me.
But maybe now I’ll have somebody to go shopping with. (Yes, that’s a dig at husband… )
Makes me feel better that mine doesn't want to go at all. He just wants to stay home and do things with dad and will wear what I pick out for him. I hope that this will last for awhile longer!I used to shop the same way when Dale was little. I would find all kinds of cute T-shirts on sale and most of them he would wear. However at about 5 he decided he didn't like jeans anymore. I eventually found out that it was because I wouldn't put them in the dryer and they were stiff. These days he stays away from stores as much as possible. Even though he is picky about what he wears he would rather I bring it home and take it back if he doesn't like it or it doesn't fit. Needless to say this doesn't happen often. Of course at 16 he has his own money and can drive so before to long hopefully he will shop for himself. I never have really enjoyed shopping for a boy.
