Youngest said these words (OK, he really didn't include the word little, but it makes me feel better...) and then saw the horrified look on my face. You could tell he knew maybe, just maybe, the words sounded a little harsh.
(Let’s just say I started breathing hard and tried to flatten out my backside, like this would really help anything… Did I mention he pulled me to the bathroom mirror to make me look at the evidence myself???)
He sees my horrified look, yet doesn’t back down. He’s trying to be helpful. To guide me in a quest to have a smaller bottom. This is a boy, mind you, who calls himself “The Fixer” and believes it’s his role in life to make crying kids at recess stop crying, sad kids happy again. And well, help his gravity-challenged, bigger-bottomed mom get a little smaller.
“You know,” he says “we can go bike riding. It works your legs and bottom. It won’t make you stronger in your arms, but it will help your legs and bottom.”
Inside, I’m wanting to scream, “Enough with the legs and bottom, I get it.” But, really, the mom in me thinks it’s pretty darn cute. He’s trying to help. Be my own personal trainer. Who wouldn’t love that?
“You know, that’s a great idea,” I say. “We’ll get on the bike.”
Seems he has seen my determination in trying to shed a few pounds and get healthier. Not by peddling a bike but peddling my feet so to speak. Yep, I’ve started running. Around the track at the fitness center (a lovely Christmas gift from the loveliest sister) and in 5K races. Ok, by races, I mean just two. But my friend, Melodee, laid down the gauntlet of doing 10 5K’s in 2012 -- and I actually accepted the challenge.
That was before youngest informed me about the work my legs and bottom need. Now I think I was to do 20. Hmmm.... wonder if Melodee's game.
Yesterday, we ran the groundhog race. Finished in good time. Great time, in fact. More than two minutes faster than our first race. ... Did I mention that her lovely son was there at the finish line to congratulate us?
And oh yeah, I’m also down about 12 pounds. Can we all say, “Yay!!!”
So I won’t be winning any biggest loser contests or get my picture on a magazine holding a pair of jeans or get on a Subway commercial or anything.
But, maybe, just maybe, my little guy at home will look at my bottom one day soon and declare that it’s flat enough. I still haven’t had the heart to tell him his dad gave my bike to the Goodwill. When I’m out walking alongside him as he rides his, he forgets all about my need to exercise.
Hmmmmm….. Maybe he wasn’t trying to tell me I need to exercise more. Maybe it was his ploy for me to let him ride his bike around the neighborhood every night. …. Yeah. Maybe it's easier to think that.
I love that your son is a helper and fixer! A personal trainer is always a good idea. I'm impressed with your weight loss and your dedication to working out. Maybe some day I will actually run a 5K instead of just thinking about it!The Fixer really makes my day! Gotta love the tact of a 5 year old. My girls have commented about my jiggles. And they aren't in the "good" places. They like me to wave so they can see my granny arms swing. And the bottom, oh that one never stops. Sounds like you are on a great path to health and your son is gonna shove you there if you get tired!
