Warning: OK, this is one of my “throw some words down on the screen blogs.” Try not to do them often, but it appears – yet again – that my procrastination has gotten the better of me.
I planned to blog tonight (Sunday). I'd turn on Brothers and Sisters and sit in bed and write all about teens. What I've learned about them. What I still don't know. (It's all related to the Star Magazine piece See Me.)
But then tornadoes ripped through southwest Missouri and I have to get up at 4 a.m., just seven hours from now. So.... I will write … about tornadoes.
Do they fascinate anyone but me? We've had the news on for the past two hours watching scenes from the devesated hospital, neighbors frantic about finding neighbors and a Weather Channel reporter break down on his live feed. And now... CNN is reporting 24 dead so far.
Just looking at the images from Joplin, it's like they're photos from Greensburg. The trees, with the bark sucked off of them, are just the same. I've covered three towns wiped away by tornadoes. This fourth one may be the worst.
Now to interrupt this blog... Have you ever noticed that anytime you're in a hurry, you always end up taking longer to do a simple task??? I was whipping through this blog and all of a sudden my laptop shut off. Lost half of everything I typed... And now I just have five hours to sleep.
On that note... tell me anything about tornadoes. I feel horrible for basically phoning this in, so type anything. Ha,ha. Ever been in one? Know someone who has? Ever sat for hours watching coverage on TV?
Now CNN says the Joplin high school has been hammered. And supposedly a witness said - who knows if it's true - that the storm sucked someone through a hospital window.
I'm getting why the weather reporter started crying on TV.
I really loved that piece on the teens yesterday, it made my day--and then well, we all saw what you did on the news. A stream of consciousness blog is totally fitting!My family was literally across the street from the F-4 or F-5 tornado that hit Omaha on May 6, 1975. We take the warnings seriously and aways head to the basement. I was only 7 at the time, but you never forget. Total devsation, the twister literally jumped over the hotel our grandparents were staying at...we were huddled under tables in the dining room. Still gives me goose bumps.Don't apologize for writing so quickly (you still write better than I do!). Ever seen a tornado? Kind of. KC had a tornado on the north side a few years ago, and the weather was still unsettled the next day. I went to work and looked up to see weird clouds I'd never seen before. They're called "mamma" because they hang like a woman's breasts and sometimes preceed tornadoes. I. Just. Froze. I stood and watched them whip away. How do you know you're from Kansas? When you hear the tornado siren, you go outside to see where it is. Not to make fun of Joplin, just saying. God help Joplin.I was teary earlier when I heard about the young man that was sucked out of his dad's car (dad is in ICU). I do know that if the sirens sound tomorrow I WILL go to the basement as I ignored them Saturday night.It's days after your blog and we're hearing even more devastation. But I SO appreciate your stories about the amazing people who have made it through. That's what I need now--some good news stories among the bad. As for tornadoes, when my kids get scared, I remind them that I am nearly 41 and lived in the Midwest most of my life without truly encountering a tornado. Crossing my fingers that I keep that record going!
