I was just sitting there watching the game and relaxing just ever so bit. Teetering between hoping the coaches put No. 13 into the game and then praying like anything that they didn’t. I kind of like just seeing his back, knowing he’s part of the team, and not having to worry about all that other stuff. You know, getting hurt, missing the tackle or forgetting the plays. Or not thinking he did well.
But in an instant, husband shakes me from my contentness.
“Thin girls make more money,” he says.
Excuse me?
“That’s what this new study says,” he adds, turning the iPad to show me.
Now, yes, my husband takes an iPad to middle school football games. If oldest isn’t in, he’s scanning the news. And yes, people look at us weird. Oh well, I digress.
Did you hear that thin girls make more money?
I instantly started fuming. Almost as if he had just read a headline on MSN that said “Laura Bauer, you could make more money if she just lost a little weight.”
So I go through a litany of how that study is just plain dumb. What’s a little extra weight. Doesn’t that just mean you’re content, you're happy. And to celebrate you just eat a little extra steak and a bag of M&Ms. The small bag, mind you.
The next morning, my anger only grew. Not only do thin girls make more money, but it seems that heavier men make more money than thin men.
Oh the injustice. We gain a few (yes, just a few) pounds and we lose out on some dough and they get all doughy and rake in more cash.
Not even sure about the logic here.
According to the study, women who weighed 25 pounds less than the group norm earned about $16,000 more per year. A woman 25 pounds above the group norm earned about $14,000 less. For the life of me, I couldn’t find out how much the “group norm” weighed.
Thinner men, on the other hand, made almost $9,000 less than their average male co-worker.
Please tell me this drives others crazy too. Of course I have a newfound desire, determination to lose a little weight. Who couldn’t use a raise?
As much as I would like to lose some weight, I don't think that it will help me make more money at work, but it is too bad that it is true.This has to be skewed somehow. First off, who thinks of conducting such studies? Secondly, what lines of work are we talking about here? Are these starting salaries? What part of the country are we in? I have never trusted these types of studies. I've always thought they were designed to irritate people and pit us against one another on one basis or another.
