Somewhere along Interstate 70, between Concordia and Independence, on Friday night I confessed my love for Steve Jobs. Two days before my wedding anniversary no less.
But even my husband understands. I mean, the guy invented the iPad. The most beautiful, wonderful gadget of all gadgets.
Which leads to my story.
My sister was driving through an insane storm Friday night, barely able to see the road as rain turned to hail and back to rain. And there I sat in the passenger’s seat of our Sentra, iPad in my lap, constantly refreshing the National Weather Service’s website. Each time new colors covered the satellite map, I’d let sister know, as youngest sat in the backseat only aware of what his Pokemon was evolving into on his new Nintendo ds.
The radio wasn’t working so without that little piece of gadget heaven we’d be going blindly into the storm. I couldn’t handle that kind of suspense. That’s why I just let the iPad guide our way.
So, yes, I love Steve Jobs. We made it safely home and I declared I would soon write Mr. Jobs a love letter.
In that letter, I’ll include a few more things.
Like how the iPad has helped youngest learn his letters and numbers, all while he sings catchy little tunes.
How it’s taught me to actually enjoy walking on the treadmill. (Watching Law & Order through Netflix, is there anything better?)
Or how, it’s also taught youngest that burping is quite funny. Yeah, gotta love that app on the munching apple.
In fact, I’ve only found one downside. It’s not how you want to read a book, not if you’re the kind of reader who must read the last page first.
I’ve been doing this ever since high school. I can’t stand surprises. Suspense is not for me. I have to know what happens before it happens. A control freak I guess.
Well, shortly after getting the Ipad I downloaded the Kindle app and was so excited to add a couple of books. And it just killed me.
I can only read page to page, unless I want to flip through hundreds of pages to find the last one. Who knows how long that would take me. (If there is some sort of a trick to flip to the last page I haven't learned it yet.)
So I read a book the old fashioned way, page to page without knowing the ending. Let’s just say I’m not a fan and have only read one book and am in the middle of another one. Because I don’t know how it ends, I’m not inclined to pick up the iPad and keep reading.
I may never find out what happens to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Unless …. Hmmmmm. I could run to Wal-Mart, pick up a copy and flip to the last page. Not a bad idea.
Then I can love all parts of the iPad. Brilliant.
Guess what I was reading on my iPad last night, Laura? "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." It's just $8 on Amazon. ... Can you do a search for "END" or find the table of contents and hit Acknowledgements and flip back to the last page?Just "tested" the navigation. Finally the dictionary is there too! Hurray! ... You can go to the lower navigation and under the search icon type in "dumpster." (That seems to be the last word of the novel.) Or Under the Table of Contents icon go to "A NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR" and flip back a page to the end... I know it's not quite as fun as hearing real paper ripple....But who in their right mind named it the "ipad?!" That's just a stupid name. Anyway, you should be able to touch the bottom of the "page" on the kindle app and a scroll bar will come up. Touch werever you want to go (in your case, the last page) and voila! That's how I do it.DH covets the iPad. He is a fan of all things Apple. Maybe for Christmas... I want to read real books on real paper with my real bifocals.We haven't gotten one yet, but I love the idea of it for movies. Other than that, I guess I could learn what else it does because I really don't know. I don't buy books (library only) so I'm not inclined to add that cost to the budget, though $8 for a best seller is awesome! What else do people use it for?
