For 2 1/2 months now, the fairly large brown box has sat in our living room, next to the phone and at the foot of the stairs. I see it in the morning when I go turn on The Today Show and step over it every time the phone rings. Heck, I see it about every minute I'm in the house.
See, I put in there on Dec. 18 for a reason. So I would make sure I would mail it on time. Had to get it to the post office by Dec. 20 to make sure it got to Texas on time. Surely, with it sitting there in the middle of the room, I wouldn't forget.
Yet, did I mention it's still here in the living room? And there are Christmas presents in it. For the cutest little boy who must think his "Aunt Laura" (honorary not blood) is the most horrible lady in the world.
And indeed I am.
But here's the thing. Like always, I had the best intentions. This was the year the package would get there on time. I was just sure of it. I've been late nearly every year, but not this time.
Yet, once the presents were inside, I had a little room left. Perfect place for clothes our youngest had grown out of. Sweaters and jackets, boots and hats. Everything to get him through the winter. I kept putting things in the box, that then I started filling a bag. More and more clothes kept going into that bag. Christmas came, so did New Year's.
And then I had a good idea, I could make it a Valentine's box. But, yeah, you guessed it, Feb. 14 has come and gone. The box still sits there.
Everytime I talk to my girlfriend, I feel this horrific pang of guilt. Of course she knows me and penchant for being late and my apparent hate of the Post Office or something. And as always, she's so forgiving.
But I still feel horrible. See, she's never late. Christmas gifts for the boys always arrive several days early. And each birthday, the kids have something to open from her and her family. She's never missed.
Not even this year, after I'm the worst friend and still have her child's Christmas gifts in my living room. When oldest was opening birthday gifts tonight (yep, we've got a new 14-year-old) there was her family's gift.
How horrible am I?
So now, as my MIL put it tonight, tomorrow must be the day. Must mail the gift.
Then I got to thinking, I've got to do something extra. The way I look at it, I owe the little guy 2 1/2 months of interest. I have to send more.
Yeah, it may take me a day longer, but I've got to do something. Maybe for St. Patrick's Day?
I think I should write a thank you note too. Maybe send my friend a couple, 'please forgive me gifts.'
Anybody have any ideas? I've gotta make up for 2 1/2 months.
While you're at it, could you stop by my house to pick up the box for my husband's uncle in Germany that was supposed to have been mailed to him two Christmases ago?I have the same problem. Last week I finally sent some gift to California that I was supposed to send the week of Christmas. I am embarrassed, but it is just the way it is.Christmas Gifts will be handed off to my in laws later this week. It happens so often in our family that it's a long running joke now. If things show up on time we wonder what's wrong. :)I have a book I borrowed from a neighbor who moved to another state. She called and asked if I were done and could I mail it back. Sure. That was about 3 weeks ago. I didn't mail it because I was going to send cookies with it. Guess I'll have to give myself permission to send it sans cookies and mail the goodies later. That's the only way I'll get this done!Skip the Post Office and take it to a Fed Ex or UPS place. Sooooo much easier, faster, more pleasant than the Post Office lines (trudge, trudge). It's the avoidance of the Post Office that has made me empathize with you today. But...that wonderful other mailing place is beyond marvelous and now it's no longer a drudgery. Such ease. Pick a couple of larger envelopes to send some window clings to put on the refrigerator or other place. A set for Easter or Spring, another for Summer, any kind will do. They love to get mail at that age with their name on a BIG envelope. It's a special day when the mail arrives.
