So I’m walking through our house, minding my own business and oldest walks through the door. I welcome him home. And again, mind my own business.
I don’t ask if he likes my new, very short hair, because as we all have learned, don’t ask a question unless you know -- or can handle -- the answer. On this one, I wasn’t so sure.
It sure is short.
But apparently you don’t even have to ask a question to get a stinging answer.
“Wow,” oldest says offering up more enthusiasm than I’ve gotten out of him in weeks, “you got your hair cut. It looks nice. I like it.”
What a great kid, I think. He’ll be a great husband one day. And I beam with pride.
Oh but wait, he’s not done.
“Don’t worry if people think you look like a tomboy,” he says, “It’s just a change.”
Ouch. Must teach that boy some tact, I say. In the name of his future wife.
Then youngest, a boy of just 3, pipes in.
“It’s wrong,” he says. “It’s curly. That means it’s wrong.”
And he just kept shaking his head no. Lovely.
First, there was not a curl in my head. Second, who asked him? (OK. Just kidding on that last part, I’m not that rude of a mom.)
The comments in the past week and a half didn’t stop with them. If only they did, I could handle that, because after all their kids. But no.
I’ve gotten, ’Man, you sure did get it all cut off, didn’t you?” Or, the winner of the ‘state the obvious award’: “I see you got your hair cut.” That’s all. Nothing to say they liked it, or didn’t like it for that matter.
Another person just got all wide-eyed and said, ‘Oh … Didn’t like longer hair, huh?”
And then I just got lots of weird looks from people I know.
Now I’m not wanting people to lie and all. Just don’t say anything. Sure, I’ll wonder why you didn’t say anything and wonder if you didn’t like it. But as least I won’t ASSUME you don’t like it.
For the record, husband absolutely loved it, as did his mom and sister. I think another close friend did too, though I’m not so sure about her husband. Not a short hair kind of guy. And my sister, top of my cheerleading section, hasn’t seen it. Neither has four of my closest girlfriends.
But here’s the thing, I like it. The lady who cut it, a lady I went to for the first time because I had a gift card from sister, had a good point.
People with short hair have more confidence, she said. Long hair can be a crutch.
Interesting. Never have had a lot of confidence, but now that she mentioned it, I seem to have a little more.
Good thing, because I go back to work today after two weeks off -- one week of furlough and another of vacation.
I’ll just mind my own business and hope the lukewarm comments are at a minimum. Because that sure has worked so far….
My hair has been a zillion different styles and lengths over the years, and some people notice and some don't. They sure notice when the color changes, though! :) So when are you going to post a picture of the new 'do?I hope YOU like it! I always had long hair most of my life, until my car accident it ALL FELL OUT! After months of crying it eventually grew out - and not I keep it short. LOL, who knew I'd like it?!?!?! :)I'm trying to process the "long hair as a crutch" concept. I think of hair as non-optional accessory, and I find it easiest to style long and I'm reluctant to give up the ponytail option. I might buy that's it's a time or a financial crutch since I don't have to get it trimmed as often. I'd love to see your new short do! I love short hair.I use long hair as a crutch -- whenever I'm feeling really self-conscious I just pull out my handheld fan and wave my glorious mane around like I'm in a shampoo commercial. After that, people just stare at me in open-mouthed wonder (probably trying to absorb some of my awesomeness.) If you post a picture of this haircut you seem so very confident about, I promise we will tell you wonderful things about it. And I won't call it curly.Dying to see the hair! I've recently grown mine long and it's SO much easier to style, but a lot harder to wash and dry. I crave very, very short hair but I don't think I have the head--or hair--to pull it off (or, apparently, confidence.) Proxymom, you had me cracking up, by the way! Laura, post a picture, please.I bet it looks great! Back in March I went from long to short hair. It had been more than four years since I had short hair and it was a big step. It was funny though because once I walked around a few days I realized how much I had missed having short hair. I think that most people had positive comments and it is funny some people just don't say a word. Maybe it is better that way.If you like the new 'do that is all that matters. My son tells me I look "mysterious" when I get a new style!I hate, hate, hate my hair now. Can't wait to get it done the way I want it. Seems like where ever I go, I never get it the way I want it. Lucky you getting a good cut.
