I don’t know how it happened. At one point our toddler wanted one, giant remote control dinosaur for Christmas, then he switched that desire for a furry red dinosaur that bites your finger if you put it in his mouth. Spike or Monty Rex, that became our dilemma.
Now … he’s decided he doesn’t want anything for Christmas.
"I have enough," he says, and has been for the past two weeks. "I don’t need any more toys."
And he’s serious. He doesn’t want to talk about Christmas. If Santa songs come on, he says he doesn’t want to hear anymore. He’s also dispersed all of his gifts, saying Santa can give his gifts to family and people close enough to be our family. He names them one by one.
Seems he’s afraid of Santa. And thinks the only way to have Christmas is to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what you want.
If you don’t sit, you don’t get toys. Just last night he was talking to his grandma on the phone and she brought up Santa Claus and asked what he wanted him to bring him this year.
"I don’t want anything," he said.
This is a kid who at Halloween walked through a haunted house and wanted to scare the people jumping out at him. He roared as loud as they did. And he watches all the Jurassic Parks, never flinching at the big dinos.
Yet, the fat man in the red suits scares the socks off of him.
I’m thinking I have some work to do.
First, I’ve thrown out the idea we’ll have Santa pictures this year. Not going to force the kid up on the lap.
Second, I think we have a little writing to do. I’ve almost convinced him that we can write Santa a letter, go to the mall and see him and then I’ll hand over the letter. Not a bad idea.
The poor guy isn’t even able to enjoy Christmas at this point. And it’s not been all jingle bells for us either.
Every time we go shopping, he wants a toy. Which is unusual because we have a rule that toys only come at birthday and Christmas so we never have to deal with getting any at any other time.
Except when toddler thinks Santa isn’t coming this year.
I gave in this weekend and bought a couple of dinosaurs. It’s like I started thinking Santa isn’t coming either.
Awwww. What a cutie. My niece was afraid of Santa. She'd stand in the food court at the Independence Center and wave at him, but that was as close as she'd get. She was that way until she was about 5 or 6.Our daughter didn't like Santa last year either and we finally figured out it was becuase she didn't like the idea of a big guy in a red suit coming into our house in the middle of the night while we were sleeping. Can you blame her? We told her he was too big to fit in the fireplace and got a Santa key that could only be used once and she seemed to be okay with that. This year all fears are gone.Poor kid. Maybe ask him why he's scared of the big guy, or reassure him that Xmas happens regardless of whether you see Santa or not?Almost makes you want to let him in on the secret, doesn't it? Sometimes the whole Santa thing is exhausting. My kids aren't afraid anymore, but they think Santa can get gifts for free, so it doesn't matter if it's very expensive. I tell them Santa only gets things in each family's price range. Not exactly working 'cause he's magic and all. What if you tell him he could write a letter to Santa and ask him if he'd kindly bring any presents to Grandma and let her give them to him FOR Santa? Hate for him to be so scared of a strange man coming in his house while sleeping. Does seem kind of creepy, doesn't it?We have overcame this fear through the years of Santa (portrait) Sessions... Santa tends to get down on their level first and talk to them, not the boisterous voice. No need to even try to get too close if they are afraid, just let them come to you. We haven't lost one yet! The children that are still somewhat apprehensive, how about a chair next to Santa? I think the whole "lap" thing is where you lose them?
