On my way out the door the other morning, with my lunch and hot tea and purse and notebooks in my hand, I stopped to watch youngest and my husband drawing dinosaurs.
Husband doing the drawing, youngest telling him exactly what to draw. How cute, I think. I’ll watch a little more.
Husband draws the outline of a large dinosaur and then goes for the head. Big teeth. Huge mouth. Ferocious.
Youngest loves this and moves his head down toward the paper to get a closer look.
My lunch and notebooks and hot tea are getting heavy, so I just sit everything down. Who cares if I’m a little late? Gotta grab the cute moments when I can, right. And oh how cute the two of them are.
“Oh, that’s a mad T-Rex,” our lovely 3-year-old says, a matter-of-factly. “That must be the Mama.”
Uhhhh … excuse me? What was that? Must be the Mama, because the Mama is so mad? I'm standing right here....
Nice.
Husband looks at me and of course can’t help but laugh. Then I think, oh wait, maybe it was a joke. So I look at youngest, eager to see him laughing. That was a good one, I’d tell him.
Nope. Serious as serious can be. Just wondering why his dad stopped drawing.
Of course all the way to work I’m obsessed with this notion I’m a mad mom. And I’m just not getting it. I’m the pushover. The one who more than once lets both kids eat a cookie before breakfast. Who wakes up and sings a good morning song, squeezing each kid.I give in at bedtime when youngest says ‘Just one more book,’ about five times. And I don’t complain.
Yet somehow the mad T-Rex is a Mama. Unable to let it go, I trace back the past couple of weeks. Things going on in the house. At work. At school with oldest.
And I begin to see … One Mad Mama. Seems if yelling is the new spanking, both boys are plumb wore out. I’ve been a yelling fool.
When youngest needlessly thumps the dog in the head? For the fourth time? I yell.
When oldest loses his $150 retainer? For the third time. Oh boy do I yell.
When youngest took off a wet diaper and through it across the room, just for fun? You guessed it. More yelling.
And what about when oldest brings home a mid-term report card with only one vowel and a wide variety of consonants I’d never seen from him before. Did I yell? What do you think?
So youngest may have something. Indeed, I’m one mad Mama T-Rex these days. But I'm thinking two little dinosaurs aren't necessarily innocent in this whole thing.
Then, I get to thinking, who ever saw a dinosaur with a smile on the face, anyway.?
Good one, Laura. I could very much relate to this, it feels like I'm doing an awful lot of yelling myelf lately. One mad mama. :)
