And here I thought all those times I was mortified, embarrassed to tears growing up, would go to no use. That they would just provide those horrible memories I would spend years pushing to the back of mind. Like those curtain-like sweaters my grandma used to buy me. I’d shove them back, further and further, in my closet every year. If I couldn’t see them, then they really didn’t exist.
Just like my memories. Until last week.
I actually got to use them, put them to good use, consoling oldest.
Seems he had a pretty embarrassing moment, his most severe of his 13 years. I won’t go into what happened, detail by detail, because, well, wouldn’t that just embarrass him further? Let’s just say there was some falling involved, a little bit of some undergarments showing and a lot of laughter. Definitely not his.
During our daily 4 p.m. call, he seemed a little sad. I let it pass, thinking he was just bummed that he had homework to do on a Friday afternoon.
Then, just as he was about to hang up and I was going to get back to writing, he says, "I do have something bad to tell you."
Of course I think he failed a test, or got sent to the principal’s office. (Neither of those things has ever happened, but I constantly fear that first time.)
"Something bad happened," he adds.
Oh come on. I mean the suspense was getting the best of my sanity. Just spill, I told him.
He tells me in little pieces. First the falling.
Oh, that’s not so bad, I say.
Then the undergarments.
Oh, honey, I’m sure it was OK. At least you wear cute ones.
Then all the laughing.
This is when those times from high school, when I thought life would never be the same because I had turned into a punch line, actually came in handy.
The time when I went up to get an award and a bunch of guys I knew hollered out a word I hate more than any other word in the English language, Or the Spanish, German or French language for that matter.
To this day, I hear that word, or even read it, and in instinctively shudder and reach to cover my ears.
So just imagine what I did as it echoed, in stereo, in a crowded gymnasium. I got all flustered, ran and grabbed the award and then ran to my seat. Never looking up.
Everyone laughed. Seems the whole school knew I hated this word and found it quite funny.
Later that day, I cried.
Oldest loved this. And the story about how I had something all over my pants one day in high school and didn’t know it for a couple of hours. Kids laughed as they passed me, but I had no clue what was so funny.
And wonder of all wonders, no one even remembered that day at my 20th class reunion."Are you sure?" oldest asked. "No one remembered laughing at you?"
And just like that, my two most embarrassing moments helped him think his wasn’t so bad.
Of course, if he goes to school today and people are still laughing or someone says something about his undergarments, I’m going to have to break out a few more bad memories.
I have a few saved back, just in case.
Aren’t we glad that parenting at least gives us a purpose for them?
Great example of how bad things can actually turn out ok, even decades later! My kids get a huge kick out of my most embarrassing moment. They are fascinated about that, and they see I survived. Funny, but it helps me to see that I survived, too.That is what makes us the parents, we have the life experiences to tell them about and hope that they can learn from our mistakes.Pretty sure you can use other's bad memories as your own. I also had one of those "award" moments where everyone was chanting a certain guys name. Not cool. Then another time I sat on a hershey kiss in my friends car. You can imagine the comments I got that day in high school. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. :)I too have had to share many of my high school moments that I would liked to have left buried, however, my favorite thing to tell the girls is that there is nothing that they can do that I didn't do, I am the queen of it all...LOL or even the master of masters. I however, got even with my classmates, I wrote down all those tricks and mean nicknames that they used for me and when we had our 20th reunion I brought them out along with a few embarrassing moments of their own..they were suprised to say the least and it was great because their kids were their as well and got to hear all about it...LOL awww sweet revenge in the kind good way.
