I never was the kind who could go up and ask a guy to a dance. Or to the movies. Heck, I don’t think I ever even called a guy first.
No, I was more the ‘wait-until-they-ask-me-first' kind of girl. (I’m just guessing here, but that may be why I never dated in high school and basically didn’t until my third year of college.) Sure spent a lot of time waiting, and hanging out with my girlfriends. But, for me, that was oh so much better than hearing the word "no" I guess.
These days, as a mom of a young teen boy, I’m marveling at the girls who just boldly go where I never could. They do the asking. The calling. The writing of notes.
Don't you just love that?
Son has his first dance coming up, the day before Halloween. He planned on asking someone, thinking that was the thing to do. It is the seventh grade, you know? But after talking with a few other moms, I realized this may not be the best idea.
Friends hang out at these dances, the more experienced Junior High moms told me. Boys on one side. Girls on the other. Every once in a while they may look over at each other, but that’s the extent of it.
So here I was, all set to use my first mom veto of Junior High. Admittedly, a little excited. I had my speech all prepared. I was going to gently suggest that he not ask anyone and just go with his friends. They’ll have fun, won’t have to worry about any pressure, and all the girls will be within eyeshot. In seventh grade, that’s all you need, right?
He’d listen to this motherly advice, I told myself.
Well I never got to give my speech. He calls me at work a couple of Fridays ago, the same Friday I had prepared the speech, and says someone asked him. And he said yes.
The dance was like three or four weeks away and he already had an invite.The girl was prepared. Gotta love that.
I admit I was a little proud of this girl I’d never met. She put herself out there. It doesn’t matter that he may say no. She’s going to ask and find out.
Of course, son is a little mortified, doesn’t know what to expect. And I’m nagging him to find out things like will they coordinate costumes and do we need to pick her up or will they just meet at school?
But getting those answers would require actually talking to the girl. What was I thinking?
“Can’t we just email her on Facebook?” he asked me. “Yeah, that’s a good idea. Let’s just email.”
Now I’m thinking it’s a darn good thing there are girls out there willing to do the asking and the calling. Some boys may just not be ready for that.
You have a great attitude about it. I can't believe there are dances in 7th grade where it's a date thing. Maybe they just meet there and are supposed to dance once? We're not in jr. high over here yet, but this is way scary to me!!! I think I'll keep my hands over my ears for a bit longer and pretend this won't come up for my girls. Think that'll work? Let us know how it turns out, though!I just chaperoned the eighth-grade mixer last week. I was worried about whether boys and girls dance together (they don't in sixth grade or seventh) but they didn't. So I'm betting your guy'll go to the dance with the girl, but they'll still separate into their boy groups and girl groups. Thank heavens. I'm not ready for much more than that.
