You know, the one who starts whining when her kid doesn’t get the lead or even a speaking part in the play. The Mom who goes to the teacher if her child isn’t being treated “special” enough. Or in my specific case, on a Johnson County football field say about 4:45 Saturday afternoon, when I was the horrible woman who complained because she feared her son wasn’t getting enough playing time.
Oh no you didn’t? I’m sure you’re saying to yourself. But, oh no, I did.
I became what I’ve preached 13 years against. The pushy, domineering mom. What was I just saying about not being a helicopter mom? Apparently now I’m a hypocrite, too.
It happened so quickly, so innocently. And it turns out, I looked like the fool. Serves me right.
All I knew at the time was I kept seeing his jersey on the sideline during defense and he’s first team defense. He’d go in a few times each drive but then he’d end up coming out. Seemed like he was running more off and on the field than we saw him running on it. Last year he was in for nearly every play.
On the sidelines, he looked miserable. He seemed a little sad, to me anyway.. (Let me just say, at that moment in time, I completely forgot my son had been feeling sick for three days and didn’t even have the energy to stay on his feet during the parade earlier in the day and had to take a nap before the game because he felt so exhausted and weak. But he said he felt good after the nap and wanted to play. …. Yeah, totally forgot all that.)
So after discussing it with another mom, I decided I’d just mosey on over to the Team Mom who was keeping track of stats. I’d be discreet.
“He’s sure not playing a lot,” I say, smiling a bit and trying to act nonchalant. Gotta love my definition of discreet.
“Really?” she says, looking bewildered that a crazy mom would complain about playing time before halftime.
Well, she goes down her checklist and nope, apparently my kid’s been in there plenty (at least for league standards) so all I could do is stand there and feel like an idiot.
Let’s just say that compounded by about 50 when she walks over to me a few minutes later and says, “He’s sick, he told the coach he needed to come out.”
Will I ever learn? Why can’t I just shut my mouth?
Thank goodness I didn’t approach the coach. Let’s believe I’m not THAT crazy, but who knows?
Son thought it was kind of funny. The kid sure does have a good sense of humor. And actually, he said he was a little sad on the sidelines because he felt he wasn’t playing his best (because he was sick!!!) and worried he was disappointing the coach.
How horrible can a mom feel?
I promise, the mouth stays shut the rest of the year. At school. At sports. EVERYWHERE!!!
I think my husband and oldest have a bet to see how long that’ll last.
No matter how hard we try, it is so hard not to have competitive mom syndrome. I did that last year at DD's tumbling competition. Won't go into details but two days later, I did feel like a fool.As I got older, I learned to let my son handle it. It is too embarrassing for mommy to do it. Plus, sometimes they do ask to be taken out and don't tell us. Luke usually had plenty of playing time though, so I really didn't have anything to complain about.If that tiny bit of egg on your face is as bad as it gets, your son is very lucky! I guarantee no one else thought about it much. I think you handled it well from what you said. Too bad we don't have a book that says what age we're supposed to let our kids do everything without our involvement. I'm gonna guess it's much later than middle school!girl, I've been there, too. This summer, I got so pissed at this goalie from the other soccer team who actually left the box and ran the ball down the field (I say that's a passive-agressive way of saying your team sucks so bad the goalie doesn't need to watch the goal) that I screamed at him from the sidelines! OMG, I yelled at someone else's kid. And he turned out to be the kid of the coach from the opposing team. After I screamed, everyone looked at me like I needed an eval from Western Mo Mental Health...
