For a new teen, at least my new teen, what he sees in the mirror these days seems pretty crucial. Always worried about the face and especially the hair. He wants to look good, not in a vain way, but a new teen way.
So we buy the skin products and make a routine out of face washing. Not to mention putting an end to step dad cutting his hair with the Wal-Mart clippers. We just started going to this salon with a sports theme and I walk away while he tells the stylist what he wants (pending a nodding approval from mom, of course).
So just imagine me seeing son after a weekend with his dad and looking -- no joke -- like he just walked of the “Dumb and Dumber” movie set and he was playing the Jim Carey role. You guessed it, the boy who looked like they put a bowl on his head and started snipping.
Son looked at me, with a sullen face, and just shook his head. The scissors had been snipping away his wonderful, carefree, Zac Efron like hair just three hours before. And the shock hadn’t worn off the poor guy yet. Up went his hood where it stayed for the next two hours.
Now my first thought was his dad’s heart was in the right place. Son looked like he needed a haircut so why not just take him to get one? Reasonable. And very nice. Trouble is, the length was just the style he was going for, in fact it had just gotten long enough to curl at the ends. He loved it -- and so did I.
And here we had the bowl look.
All I could think about was the lovely (so-called) stylist near St. Louis who let a 13-year-old with a cut like this walk from her salon thinking she’d done a good job. That she had given a haircut worthy of any amount of money, much less $15 or $20. Very annoying.
Didn’t she realize she was sending a new teen into what can feel like a shark tank? School can be rough for a kid looking like he got his hair cut after dinner, sitting in the kitchen with a sight-impaired grandma holding the scissors. Not to mention a bowl in her hand.
“Can you guys fix this?” son asked, his face showing a flash of panic at the thought that we wouldn’t be able to.
So I did what any mom would do. Later that night, I picked up those Wal-Mart clippers, sat son on the bar stool and positioned my husband nearby for support. (Never mind I'm not very good with my hands in any artsy way...)
Then I said a prayer.
And to work I went. I did my best Edward Scissorhands impression, mixed with a touch of salon slowness. I’d raise a clump of hair, eyeball it a second and them clip. Another clump and clip.
My elbows were moving fast and my lips mouthing prayers at the same time.
“Please, let this turn out OK,” I would pray. “Not even great. Just OK.”
I mean I was the girl who loved those giant Barbie dolls heads you could put make up on and style their hair. Up until the time I chopped off all my doll’s hair in uneven patches and called it glamorous. Paul Mitchell, I definitely am not.
That’s why husband stood nearby ready to jump in with his old military, high-and-tight standby.
But here’s the thing. It didn’t turn out too bad. In fact, son declared it the best short haircut he’s ever received. I considered the fact that he had the bowl hairdo just a few minutes before so he was bound to say anything.
We took before and after pictures and though son was OK with posting them, I thought better of it. We’ll keep the bowl-cut photos to ourselves for the time being.
Our personal proof that a mom can do just about anything when she’s facing her teen going to school with a haircut as perfectly round as a bowl.
Aw, c'mon, I wanted to see your handiwork!!! Good job, Mom, on braving the hair fix yourself. I'm a chicken when it comes to cutting hair. I'm just no good at it and when there's no way to hide a mistake... You get GUTS points!!!You get tons of mom points! Wow. I would have ruined it even more, if that's possible. I'm very impressed. Nice save.
