I was prepared for Rap. Even listened to a little Outkast and Eminem (and let me just say, OMG!!).
I readied myself for the band of the hour and sat through a few numbing Jonas Brothers songs and more than I care to admit of Miley meets Hannah tunes.
Not knowing which way oldest would veer in his taste of music, I even listened to a little Hip Hop. (Please don't go there -- go for something like Coldplay or the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I would say with fingers crossed.)
This crazy mom, who openly admits her love of musical geniuses Neil Diamond and Kenny Rogers, decided long ago to be prepared for any musical path oldest would venture down. If these tunes were blaring in his ears, or filling the entire downstairs, wouldn't be great if I could tolerate them? Understand them? Even talk with him about them? I know, dare to dream.
But I was trying. Preparing.
Then this child, this lovely, lovely child, throws me a curve. An absolutely wonderful curve.
Doesn't like Rap. (more than a couple thank you prayers went up for that one.) Only knows one Jonas Brothers song and has no desire to listen Miley or any Hip Hop.
Nope, this preteen doesn't mind to be different. Moves to the beat of his own drum, the parents as teacher educator said some 11 years ago.
Oh, how right she was.
For Christmas he wanted a Journey CD - yes, I said Journey. This past weekend, for Valentine's Day, he got Cheap Trick's greatest hits. And when he turns 13 next month, he wants a RATT CD.
I know. Where the hell did this kid come from, right?
He's always liked the Beatles, a blessing I've counted more than once. But I thought that was just a fluke, a little of him wanting to be like his dad who has loved the group since he was a little boy.
Not a fluke. This kid actually knows who Steve Perry is and believes Journey was never the same without him. He knows all the words to "I want you to want me."
Yes, I'm gushing, but what a lottery I won. He doesn't care that his friends like all the trendy, popular bands. He's filling his new IPOD Touch (early birthday gift from his aunt) with all the songs of my teenage years. Songs I can sing to, dance to.
My sister has tried to hip him up a bit by adding some Smashmouth (does anyone still listen to Smashmouth?) to his Ipod. He listens and likes it OK.
But as he walks through the house, singing to himself, I always drift back in time.
"Any way you want it ..."
I think this makes up for the fact I find myself sitting next to toddler watching, "Yo Gabba, Gabba" with a crazy guy who wears a pink wig and giant, funny glasses. Who knows what's in store for him? (Toddler, not the crazy guy.)
Is Mitchell's name a "family" name? Just wondering, 'cause it's one of my close family names and I almost considered using it. Meaning: I adore the name Mitchell. As for his choice in music: He's got good taste, does he listen to any jazz or blues? You sure lucked out! Where did he get introduced to Journey? We're stuck in pop rock land over here. Some songs are ok, but most... Ugh. Better than hard rock or rap for me, but not as blissful as some 80s rock. L.u.c.k.y.So lucky!! Currently we are listening to the Backyardigans! But of course mine are 1 & 3, so there is still hope!!My kids are 25 & 19. When I was growing up I felt like my parents censored my music so I never wanted to do that with my kids. When they were little I tried to provide lots of different styles of music for them. So, I've endured all sorts of music plus I added my own tastes into their growing up. Both kids like all sorts of genres but have their favorites. In particular the 19 year old is really into Metal. Not my favorite but I do talk to him about it and try to learn some thing about it. I've always tried to have an open mind and a good relationship with my kids in all areas.I adore Neil Diamond, and I'm not ashamed to say it. Sigh. Right now my daughter's interests range from the Pokemon theme song album to Miley and Hannah and the Jonas Bros. The one hopeful spot is that she likes a psychedelic 70s band her dad introduced her to called Gong. Her favorite album of theirs is "Radio Free Gnome." Keeping my fingers crossed that it's a long time till it occurs to her to ask what some of the songs are about. Also keeping my fingers crossed that she doesn't start humming some of the tunes on DARE day at school. What an awesome surprise! We have several years left until I have to deal with blaring sterios. I'm sure her tastes will change. Right now, she loves the musical stylings of Between The Lions and a passel of showtunes... of course, she gets down to some of mommy's faves. Which is always good. As you already know. :) Has your DS discovered stuff like The Ramones yet???Hmm... the 70's... let's hope drugs aren't mentioned in the songs ... pot/cocaine ... I don't think any music is safe. I've often jammed out to some Pink Floyd in my day ... umm... "we don't need no education..."Hmm... the 70's... let's hope drugs aren't mentioned in the songs ... pot/cocaine ... I don't think any music is safe. I've often jammed out to some Pink Floyd in my day ... umm... "we don't need no education..."DD is the same way. She does have some Eminem on her iPod, but she also has tons of Simon & Garfunkel, and her most treasured songs are from musicals -- Hairspray, Les Miz, Little Shop of Horrors, Wicked, and Phantom.I think it is partially the Rock Band 2. DS 13 got an ipod for Christmas. He has loaded Bon JOvi, Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Several others I can't think of at the moment. The killer is he has always watched CSI , so he has known who The Who is since he was little. Now he has several Who songs on his ipod, and he just added a few to Rock Band 2. And he lets me listen to his ipod, so I can guess who the group is. Or listen to The Who songs myself. I never would have thought he would be listening to anything we ever listened to or let me listen to his music. What a great bonding experience. You should read my blog where I talk about DD helping me load my iPod. She and I have widely different tastes in music, but for some reason DS likes older stuff. I think it's because he is a faithful watcher of skate videos, and most of the skaters have used music from the 60s and 70s as "soundtracks" for their portions of the videos. But, who cares WHY he likes it??? At the ripe old age of 8, he discovered the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive," and there is nothing funnier than watching an 8-year-old boy strut around the house singing about being a woman's man, not time to talk.
