So I guess I can stop my worrying. I’m sure all the people who know me well are applauding right now. About damn time, they’re saying.
For a few months now our house has been a little tense, just waiting for the youngest to say something. Anything. Instead of the 100 or so words books say he was supposed to be uttering at age two, he had about six. And for the most part, he just seemed like he didn’t have anything to say.
My insanity increased with each new month and the dozens of additional words he was supposed to be saying.
The poor kid was saying “Eh,” all the time and I had convinced myself it was a real word.
“Eh,” when he pointed at a train.
Yeah! He said train, I would yell.
“Eh,” he’d say pointing at the sun.
Honey, he just said sun, I’d holler to my husband.
Then I would have alone time when I knew these weren’t words and I actually had visions of him in Kindergarten, uttering “Eh,” every time the teacher called on him.
Many of you moms on here told me to relax, the words would come. One day he would just explode, you said. I must admit I had little faith.
Last month, though, the pediatrician said it was time to have him evaluated. Of course I freaked. And waited a few weeks.
In those weeks I heard about a little boy just four months older than our youngest who was already counting to 40 and who in Spanish could get to 10.
Meanwhile our lovely child was drinking out of the dog dish on all fours. Impressive feat I thought.
Just when my worry got a little more insane, our toddler exploded. He really exploded.
On Halloween night.
“Happy Halloween,” he started telling people. “Treat.” And “Go, Go,” as he pushed his older brother up each driveway running after more candy which he appropriately called “candy.”
Now he’s saying anything and everything. No more “Eh.”
And he’s started piecing words together. Even given a good disgruntled “All right,” after he’s told to go do something he doesn’t want to do.
Isn’t it funny how mom worry can take over? How it’s hard to think rationally when you’re sure that horrible, bad things are going to happen to your child or already have?
I mean all the reassurance in the world won’t make a bit of difference. I think this time, though, I’ve learned a little something.
All kids start out a little differently. Some more advanced, others taking their sweet time. But eventually they catch up.
I never have seen a Kindergartener just sitting there uttering “Eh,” all day long.
What was I so worried about?
Now you're going to start to wonder, "why did we ever want him to talk?" My 6 year old talked a little late, and now she never stops. (My poor ears). :)DD isn't really talking yet, but that is ok cause then I would have two that never stop. If the oldest has nothing to say he just hums so that he can hear himself ALL of the time!!!My DD wasn't talking at all when she turned 2, so we put her into speech therapy (it's free and they come to your home). They were astounded at how quickly she caught up, and after only a few months, she's almost where she needs to be. I never worried about it, to me it was just words, nothing fatal, so I was good. Her personality has really taken off too.Yay for your little guy! Even though in the back of your head you know that everyone develops at their own pace, it's almost impossible as a mom to not worry about it. Especially, I would imagine, once a pediatrician begins talking "evaluations." I'm sure the weight of the world is off your shoulders. Happy day, happy day! :DOur daughter was the same way. She said about 4 words until 15 months and then started talking in sentences overnight. I guess they were just waiting until they had something important to say. She hasn't run out of things to say since.Yeah! Congrats! I know exactly what you mean about mommy worry. One DD is very verbal, which makes me think something isn't right with other DD. Yet non-verbal DD is very physical, while verbal DD couldn't get herself out of a paper bag (not that I've put her in one). So then I worry about a physical problem with her. But just as I REALLY start to freak, they each come up with some new skill or word that puts my mind at ease.Those pesky gow charts. Every child is different, but I guess there has to be guidelines. At 2 mine knew the basic words, then nothing. All of a sudden at 2 1/2 is was like a light clicked on and he caught right up, even saying sentences. Now at almost thirteen I am lucking to get two words out of him that I have prodded. For those of you who think there kids will not ever stop, wait for the teenage years. Then you'll wish they talked to you more.
