Lent is here. Again.
You know what that means for the Catholics.
Fish! Fish! Lobster! Shrimp! And cheddar bay biscuits!
It's time for the Jonas' annual Red Lobster pig-outs.
When you live in the land of fresh/local beef and pork and you want seafood, Red Lobster is the place to go. Long John Silver's and Captain D's are OK if you're in a rush, but they are nothing compared to Lobster Fest!
We've been to Red Lobster twice in the past week. Hey, the tax return came through, what can I say?
Remeber when Red Lobster was considered the "fancy" place to eat? I mean, we'd do prom and homecoming there.
We weren't planning on going the second time around, but after sending my son to school with a turkey sammich on Ash Wednesday I felt guilty.
We needed some seafood.
Succulent, juicy seafood.
And we needed some cheddar bay biscuits. Oh, the endless supply of those soft, airy, buttery, cheesy biscuits... eating them brings me great joy. So heavenly.
I had no idea you could buy them frozen in stores.
It's hard for me to write that I love Red Lobster so much when my husband and I are frequent Key West lovers. We go twice a year and stuff ourselves with the freshest seafood.
We catch our own yellow tail right from the Atlantic and have the boat mate clean/gut/filet them so we can take it to a local restaurant and have them fried it up.
It was funny to me to see the fresh fish menu include a $25 grouper. You can get a fresh grouper sammy in Key West for five bucks.
I know, grouper isn't local. And it takes a few days to ship it to the middle of America.
At least seafood is a good source of Omega-3.
Omega-3 is known to: help protect against heart disease, help prevent the spread of some cancers, helps relieve inflammatory diseases and can improve the skin condition of psoriasis sufferers.
Thank heavens for Red Lobster!
(...And their cheddar bay biscuits.)
As for the health benefit of a cheddar bay biscuit, yeah, probably none, maybe a little iron.
Where do you all think the best seafood in town is?
I almost forgot about The Landing in Liberty, MO, they have a pretty good fish po boy sandwich if you're ever up that way.
At home we usually eat gourmet potato-encrusted cod or tilapia. Anyone have any excellent seafood recipes?
Does anyone ever read mom2mom anymore?
Sheesh.
You can also make the biscuits from scratch at home. Just google it. They couldn't be easier! Never had fish at the Landing. My favorite thing to eat there is the fried mushrooms. Yummy! Red Lobster--the fly over states sea food restaurant! :)My husband's favorite restaurant is Red Lobster! He loves shrimp! And, he loves the biscuits - I think last time we went, he asked for a second basket, and I never even had one biscuit. Have you ever been to McCormick & Schmick? They have the best Jamaican rum butter crusted tilapia! It's to die for!I do like Red Lobster...and the biscuits! We grew up eating fish like people eat meatloaf in the country and it was always fried. Usually crappie or catfish, always filets nice and flaky. Dipped in beer then cornmeal/cracker meal and fried. Now I like to get fresh tilapia (or any mild fish) or frozen will work and broil it. Drizzle with olive oil, top with crushed garlic, a tiny bit of oregano, parsley, s/p. broil on low about 7 minutes until flaky. Also works great with salmon filets. Olive oil, garlic, rosemary, s/p. Broil until flaky. Delicious with squeezed lemon or tarter sauce. Enjoy the season! And yes....I do read mom2mom!Somehow Tilapia got overfished (despite farming) and it's Swai lately. Still a veg. fed fish, right? The local grocers (Hen House, Trader Joes lately, Cosentinos') are no fish deserts even if most don't get time to chitchat on biodiversity and keeping their fish lines popular both. Whole Foods you know now and again. McCormick & Schmick work to earn their rate all right. Lawrence has its fish nebbishes, but that's no reason not to ask as Le Feu Frog what fish bender they want to be in on.
