My first experience at a drag queen show was in my early twenties at a place called "Missy B's."
I was never one to judge others based on their sexuality, skin color, culture or what have you. I was open to the idea when my friend asked if I wanted to go.
The entertainment was impressive. I enjoyed the sequins, the makeup and the singing. The drinks weren't bad either.
Back in the day I would have never been able to talk Luke into going to a drag show with me.
That's all changed since we adopted the proclamation of Key West, FL: "One Human Family."
We agreed with the proclamation, standing for:
"Sharing a unique perspective and simple (but true) words of hope "ONE HUMAN FAMILY" with our global neighbors, so others can find inspiration to grow beyond the artificial limitations of racism, nationalism, sexism, classism, monotheism, prejudice, homophobia (and every other illusion used to try to separate us from all being equal); and we acknowledge that the genie of human equality is now out of the bottle, and that tyranny and oppression of any sort can never again be tolerated anywhere in the world, by anyone."
Luke has changed.
We now wear our "One Human Family" wristbands almost daily.
Last July, in Key West, my husband and I enjoyed ourselves in bars I'd normally not be able to convince him to go into.
I'm proud of him, for learning to be more acceptable and comfortable.
This past Wednesday, that same friend of mine who many years earlier convinced me to have fun at Missy B's, also invited me to Hamburger Mary's Charity Bingo Night Benefiting the American Cancer Society.
When the host of the night, the fabulous Melinda Ryder, announced to the crowd that Hamburger Mary's welcomes all people including "gay, straight, black, white, pink, sparkly, dotted and orange," it gave me chills and reminded me of "One Human Family."
It didn't matter that I was a straight female with light colored skin and blonde hair, no one cared what anyone was. We were all there having fun. No one judged.
I loved the type of BINGO we played. It's too dirty to describe here, but I'm sure you can use your imagination.
I needed some laughs after the depressing news these past weeks.
In light of the past events involving the horrific scene at Sandy Hook and those innocent children, I wanted to also remind people that we can spread happiness and comfort by treating everyone with respect and acceptance.
With so much hatred in the world, we have the power to influence our children to just simply... love.
We are all, "One Human Family."

“The winds that sometimes take something we love, are the same that bring us something we learn to love. Therefore we should not cry about something that was taken from us, but, yes, love what we have been given. Because what is really ours is never gone forever.” - Bob Marley
I love this-from the point of view that yes, both places have awesome entertainment, that they give me a place to feel comfortable in my own skin and that one of those places is where I met someone very special in my life right now. If we keep wedging the divide between people wider then we lose touch, creating the kind of tragedies that occurred last week and farther into the past.
