Why? (Note: this is not Bo)

They're all gonna start coming.
You know...
Christmas cards inserted with pictures of kids dressed in red, green and gold standing next to cheesy Christmas studio props.
Little Suzy will have on her best dress and she'll be standing by a perfect plastic tree with giant silver ornaments. Little Tommy will have on a mini-tuxedo and will be propped up on fake wrapped gifts. Perhaps there will be a choo-choo train chugging around him. Might as well put Max, the dog, in the mix with some reindeer antlers on.
We have never taken a family Christmas photo. We've also never brought Bo to a portrait studio for a Christmas photo.
We're just not into that sort of thing. I dislike posed photos.
I've always wondered why people spend so much money on "professional" posed pictures. Especially when you get them done 4 or 5 times a year.
You got your standard Christmas portrait, your Easter/Spring portrait, your summer portrait and your fall photo.
Don't forget about school pictures and sports team pictures and... what else is there?
Usually I only order the basic package when ordering school pictures. Who needs 50 wallets? 20 years from now I'll be digging through old pictures and wonder why I have so many of the same school year.
When Bo was a baby we took him to get his photo taken at Portrait Innovations, then I realized after he was around 9 months we had spent way too much money on pictures.
They always seem to suck you in to buying more than what you originally planned. I always thought it was sad knowing that the pose you didn't pick would be tossed into the trash bin on the company's computer.
BUT! You can buy the CD with everything on it for $50 PLUS get a free... blah blah.
I started taking my own documentary type pictures, which I like better anyways. I didn't have to delete or choose from anything. I can make them black and white in Photoshop and it wouldn't cost me a darn thing. I can rotate, crop and add filters to as many pics and for as long as my little heart desires.
I'm just gonna say it, the family photos where you see everyone's back and everyone's walking away from the camera holding hands in some sort of park or field... yeah, I hate those.
I really do. I think they are right up there with cheese balls and cheese puffs.
Besides, I wouldn't want anyone snapping a photo of my arse.
I know everyone's been on the site, www.awkwardfamilyphotos.com. Please tell me you have.
Sooo, who's taking their kids to Olan Mills next weekend?
Hey, go for it!
One thing I will say is, I think it is important to have a professional take your wedding pictures. Most wedding photographers take documentary type pics anyways.
If you can find a photographer that will come over to your house and spend half a day with your kid while taking pictures, I think that'd be the way to go. Expensive, but the way to go. Really, you just need to do this once a year, not 5.
We had a photographer friend come over when Bo was a baby and she took photos of him around our house and outside. They turned out really sweet.
We need a forum or photo gallery of kid Christmas pictures on mom2mom. Come on ladies, start one!
I use to have our Christmas pictures taken at Target - they did a nice job & the cost was 3.99/sheet with a coupon. They usually gave me the Smile thing for free, so I'd be able to download the pics & put them on Facebook. We always used the black, white or brown background. I do not purchase school pictures because I think they are always awful.Everyone has their preferences-being on a limited budget, I don't do pictures yearly and don't even always buy school pictures. They get a yearbook that has that picture in it anyways. But, a few months ago, a friend of mine whose husband's life was on a limited timetable, he had only been given six months to live, toted her family into Penney's and had the most wonderful pictures taken of them together-maybe the poses were a little cheesy, and it might have been pricey, but those memories are precious-she lost him the other day after a brave fight and they are part of her arsenal of memories of her life with him.I do agree that some of the pictures can be a little cheesy, but I think it's important to have those memories of your kids from year to year if possible. We've only done the Christmas picture thing a couple of times, simply because it was the only time we had a picture of all four of us. I do buy the school pictures now that both kids are in school, but the only other times we have taken posed pictures have been with our dog with a really wonderful local photographer. I think it's really important to have family pictures for the memories. I especially like comparing year to year to see how much my kids have grown. Also, friends and family (mine at least) like to see pictures of my children, and sometimes either the wallets of the school pictures or the places like Picture People are the only way to get good ones to send to them.I don't like those posed pictures just because my kids don't really look like that. Even in school pictures, I sometimes look at them and wonder who that kid is. I would rather have a holiday picture of my kids opening presents or playing in our yard in the snow, in real life. Those are the memories I want, not a memory of some photographer telling my kids to say "cheese" while he snaps a picture and charges an arm and a leg. I'm with you, Tasha. No Olan Mills for us.Of course you never know what the future holds. I did a photoshoot for a friend of mine's family last November. They almost backed out due to an ill feeling son but went ahead and did it. Four months later-the husband was killed. Cheesey memories that will never happen againI think that one thing to keep in mind is that while we are all busy documenting our children's growth with pictures, we forget to turn the camera around. As I go through my family pictures (we split them between the kids), I noticed that there are scant photos of my parents. I would have liked to see and have "parent growing older" pictures too.
