Perhaps I am being too sensitive.
I am 4 & ½ months along in my first pregnancy and I have told all of my friends and co-workers that I am now expecting.
The weirdest thing started to happen…. my co-workers started to touch my belly. Keep in mind that I am *barely* showing. It’s not like these are my close friends or family. The people who are really touching are work acquaintances.
What is it about being pregnant that gives people the license to touch your belly?? Will I encounter strangers wanting to touch my belly when I am really showing? Am I being too sensitive about this?
What are/were your experiences with this? How should I handle this?
Oh, I hated that. Especially when I would go to the store and perfect strangers would come up and rub by stomach. Just wanted to jump up and down screaming and tell them to get away from me.Short of wearing a shirt that says, "Touch me and pull back a stump," I think you'll have to figure out something to say to people. I predict that perfect strangers will want to touch your belly. You might try something like, "I appreciate your interest, but I'm not a touchy-feely person. Please don't rub my belly." I read a Dear Abby column about this once, but can't remember exactly what she said to do.Just rub their belly back a give them a look that only a mother to be can give. I had some friends ask if they could, and I allowed it, but I didn't go for the random rubbing thing.I wasn't one to appreciate having my gut rubbed, either. I would try to anticipate it and step back. Or rub their belly back. They usually got the picture.Rubbing their belly back usually put a stop to that business :) My co-workers and I were all close though, so with them I usually didn't say anything, but I had a lady at the grocery store do it once...I rubbed her tummy too, and she had this horrified look on her face. :) Above all, just expect this to get worse. There is something magical about having another person inside of you, and I guess people are just eager to want to share in it. After the kid is born, you'll be eager for someone to pay attention to you!! :DYou're not being sensative. I'm 7 1/2 months and hate that other people think they can just touch me. I'd love to give you some great advice, but am still battling it myself. I don't have the nerve to to rub some one else back, nor to say something. I like the way janelled said it, "There is something magical about having another person inside of you..." I guess it gives the person touching you a little connection to the miracle you are carrying. Not that that helps or makes it ok, but think of the great fun we are going to be having with our little ones before too long. :)
