“Mom, we are at Bikini Bottom,” Niko told me Saturday night. Well, it’s close. Not to rub it in, but we are in sunny Florida right now. Ahhhhh….
We only really have one vacation a year and this is it. My parents own a house in Florida and we spend one week a year with them in January. I mean… if you are going to spend a week in Florida, wouldn’t you make it in January?
I must say, the older I get, the more I appreciate this week. Not only is it the only time I get to really spend with my parents, but also it’s the only time my parents get to spend a full week with Niko-chan.
I definitely appreciate a week away from our daily grind, but it is REALLY nice to be away from the 24-hour work schedule both DH and I operate under. I know several of you know what I am talking about… in this day in age, you are expected to be on-call all day, everyday. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job and we are very fortunate to have the jobs we have, but it is nice to disconnect for one week a year.It’s so nice to be able to spend an uninterrupted week as family with Niko-chan. Since DH and I both put in a lot of hours a week, we rarely get to have much hangout time during the week. It’s really nice to have this quality time together.
Back to Bikini Bottom, yea, it’s pathetic when your kid thinks the beach is something out of a SpongeBob cartoon. But it is funny when your kid tells a complete stranger that we are at Goo Lagoon and they look at you like he is crazy, friendly, but crazy.
I totally used Niko’s super SpongeBob knowledge to my advantage down here. I took Niko jet skiing with me in the back bays on one of the afternoons and his hat blew off his head. (Before anyone freaks out, I have been jet skiing for years and he had is life jacket on and we stayed in the no-wake areas.)
I had no idea this would be such a traumatic experience for him. Wow. You would have really thought something horrible happened here. He was frozen solid and upset about the hat. So…. I did what any other terrible parent would have done. I totally lied to him.
I told him not to worry, because SpongeBob and Patrick found it in Bikini Bottom and that they were going to take care of it for him. And….. it worked like a charm.

I don’t feel bad about it at all – I really couldn’t understand why he was so sad about the hat to begin with. This was a hat that I dug out of a Tupperware in one of my parent’s closet that was pink and said VIP (Very Important Princess) on it. Yea, so I put my little boy in a girl’s hat, like anyone would be able to recognize that on a jet ski!
Well, at least I know what Niko will be going into therapy for later in life.
