Last week, I took Niko to his 3-year-old wellness check with his pediatrician. All is well, he’s in good health and seems to be on track for development. He got his flu shot and his lead poisoning finger prick (thanks Jackson County) and we were on our way to get his reward ice cream.
The only thing that was kind of a bump in the road was the whole milk drinking thing. Niko has not been a fan of milk for the last 6 months. I thought getting some chocolate milk would do the trick, but I would up drinking it myself. He’s not a fan…..
Niko’s doctor was not pleased to hear that he didn’t like milk and that he hasn’t really been drinking it over the last few months. It’s not like he’s not eating any milk-products… he eats cheese like crazy and gobbles down Gogurts fairly well. I also give him a chewable multivitamin with added calcium to help round him out.
DH is lactose intolerant – in fact it’s very common for people with Asian decent to have some form of lactose intolerance. Part of me wonders if Niko avoids milk because it upsets his stomach and he’s just to young to tell me.
If you think about it… Western cultures are really one of the only cultures that drink milk after childhood. If we were in Japan, the very question of “does Niko still drink milk” would never even come up.
But we are here in America and I need to figure out how to get my stingy toddler to get on the “Got Milk” campaign.
So what’s a mom to do?
I bought some strawberry milk this weekend and he drank about a tablespoon of it before telling me he “no like it, I want juice.” Ugh. Soooo… it looks like I have a half-gallon of strawberry and chocolate milk sitting in my fridge waiting for someone to love it (me.)
Any ideas to get a milk-hater to change his ways?I wouldn't worry if he is getting enough of the other dairy products, cheese, yogurt, etc. I have a daughter that really doesn't like milk, but loves the other stuff. I also give a multivitamin which helps me worry a little less.Is this the same doctor from a couple of months ago? If it is, I seriously think you need to change doctors. :-)Ah, maybe it wasn't you (someone had blogged or posted about their pediatrician being somewhat condescending). Do what you can, sneak it in if you have to (milk shakes anyone), but I wouldn't stress about it.The need for milk is overrated. Vit D is found in other foods and sun. In adults dairy creates cellulite, so why push something that is not good for you. Niko knows that he doesn't need the milk.I think there are so many other options out there for milk. Try soy milk or rice milk. I personally am not a milk fan and have never been since I was a kid. However, I do love cheese, yogurt and ice cream. As an adult, I usually use rice milk to cook with or on my cereal. You can get the yummy flavors like vanilla, which makes it better than milk for cereal. I would just look to these as alternatives. Watch the juice, it's bad for their teeth. Trust me, years later I still have problems with my teeth, as my mom always let me drink juice since I didn't like milk.I'm an adult that has never liked milk. I eat cheese and yogurt, just not milk. I don't think milk is important if he doesn't like it and is getting the nutrients from elsewhere. I would not advocate soy milk. Soy is not a healthy food; the only soy humans should even consider eating is fermented soy. I avoid soy whenever possible.I was never a milk drinker and my son isn't either. We eat cheese, yogurt, ice cream and everything else milk related (cream soups), but just not a glass of milk. Can't stand that scummy aftertaste and feel. We have never had a problem. I gave my son a multivitamin and substituted water at meals to avoid the extra sugar and calories of juice. No bone or teeth problems for it. I wouldn't be too concerned. The other foods are plentiful in today's diet and he does like them.My daughter never liked formula or milk. Luckily we had an enlightened pediatrician who lifted the "Thou Must Drink Milk" guilt from my shoulders by telling me some kids just don't like milk, and Isabella is entitled to her preferences. He said to make sure she has plenty of calcium in her foods and to give her calcium-enriched juices, which she loves. He also predicted that when she got to elementary school age the peer pressure would cause her to drink chocolate milk, which is exactly what happened. You're doing great, mom. Don't fret.
