In case you haven’t noticed, there is a definite trend to my last few blogs. I need to get off my duff and get moving.
As part of my job, I am working with a great group of people involved in the Let’s Move! initiative. I have attended several Let’s Move! summits and I must say… I sit in embarrassment.
The Let’s Move! initiative is a program generated by First Lady Michelle Obama. The initiative challenges communities to help solve the challenge of childhood obesity locally by bringing citizens together to enact common sense, innovative solutions that empower families and communities to make healthy decisions.
My job is to help communicate ideas generated on how to fight childhood obesity during the summits. All I really think about is how hypocritical it is for me to say anything!
I am not huge, but I am not healthy either. I frequently skip meals then gorge in hunger when I get home and I haven’t exercised since I was pregnant with Niko…. Three years ago.
If you don’t think this is an epidemic, you are sorely mistaken. Don’t believe me? Check out this link to see where Missouri and Kansas rank on Obesity Rate…. Hint – it’s over 25% of us. Even better, visit ANY community pool this summer and have a look around. We have been going to the pool every week and yea…. Not pretty. (Myself included.)
One thing I have vowed to do is start eating the same food I feed my son. The food I feed him is better than what I feed myself. I make him eat more fruits and vegetable than I eat – when he gets old enough to understand that, he is going to call me on it.
Another thing I have done is begin working out again. I can really only spare about 45 minutes a day, but I have started to make myself a priority again. I used to work through my lunch hour, but I have decided to take that back and off to the gym I go. It’s only been a week, but I do feel better.
With health costs rising and the talk of businesses implementing a “sliding scale” of health care cost coverage (Higher rates for smokers or “obese” workers – yea, it’s coming – click here) – I need to do something proactive.
What do you do to keep your family healthy? I love new ideas……I think the government is the hypocrite in this situation, Kim. Just this week I was in a local fast food restaurant which had signs posted that they are now accepting food stamp cash available cards. One government hand has no idea what the other hand is doing.Maggies, I thought that was interesting, so I did some research. To use EBT at a restaurant you have to be a qualifying homeless or elderly person. It appears they hhave that program in California, ND and maybe some other states. It is meant for people that otherwise might not have a place to cook food they purchase in a grocery store. My views on staying in shape, obesity numbers in our country, etc. I don't know..we are responsible for our actions. I am a large woman because I don't necessarily take great of myself. Bottom line. The government doesn't have much to do with it, except the darned inflation and rising gas prices make it hard to afford food when all of my money pays utilities and gas! Were you able to find anything about how they verify the homeless status of the individual using the EBT card? That does make more sense (the restrictions that you listed), but working in a food related industry, I'm having a hard time picturing how the restaurant could verify that without getting into trouble for even asking.I did a little research of my own, and found that they are to have an additional id card indicating homelessness. However, as I stated before, working in a food related industry (in a small farmers market)--I can tell you there is no way there is going to be accountability, even with the cards. The government's restrictions end up being a burden for the seller; My point about the hypocrisy of the government: I would agree with you that individual responsibility that contributes largely to obesity. However, I tire of government employees or representatives chastising us as individuals for the food choices we make, while in the same breath not requiring accountability in the food stamp program (really, is it unreasonable to place restrictions on the type of food that can be purchased with food stamps? Or even limiting the amount of certain types of food that can be bought--yes, even people on food stamps should be allowed chips, but couldn't we require that there is a limit on the number of bags that can be bought per month? I knew someone temporarily on food stamps who couldn't come close to spending all the money she was given each month, but that's because she chose not to buy large quantities of the unhealthy, processed food so prevalent in our countries diet. And don't get me started on school lunch programs. If they really cared, the government would stop making the junk so easily accessible.
