I will be honest… I am VERY close.
I cut my home phone cord over 3 years ago and never looked back. At first I was worried that I would miss my home phone, but I didn’t. I especially don’t miss the constant solicitor phone calls.
We are on the verge of a new day of media consumption and it’s a day I have been looking forward to. Soon, I believe we will be able to directly subscribe to the channels we want to watch. Our cable provider won’t be chosen for us by some turf war that happened long before our houses were built.
I used to live in Comcast’s neighborhood moons ago. I will be honest… I HATED IT. When I started looking for a new house, I specifically avoided Comcast neighborhoods. Sorry if you are a Comcast lover, but I found their service expensive in cost and lacking in choice.
I have been a semi-content Time Warner Cable customer for over 10 years. Aside from being nickel and dimed to death for cable boxes and forced into “packages,” I have been pretty happy.
Currently, my heart belongs to Netflix and Hulu. Why do you say? They are cheap and flexible. I can watch them on my computer, iPod and any TV in the house. Instead of having a box that I have to rent every month on every TV in the house to get all the channels, I use my gaming systems that are already in the room. Ahhhh… I like not being nickel and dimed to death.
I know, I know. The shows on Netflix are older and it takes a while for new movies to become streaming, but hey. I’ve got time. I wasn’t able to run out and see the movie in the theater; I am perfectly fine waiting another 28 days after its DVD release.
I am getting a Roku box this week for Niko’s TV and I wonder if it will mark the end of an era for my cable box. The Roku box is wireless so I can put Niko’s TV anywhere instead of having to put it near a cable hookup. Bonus. Access to Netflix's vast library of kids movies at the push of a button? Excellent.
To be honest, if it weren’t for football, I would have cut that cable cord already. (Hear that NFL? You need to get your house in order because I know I’m not the only football-only cable cord keeper!)
How about you guys? I am always looking for a service bill I can cut… I have had my eye on our cable bill for years….BTW - VOTE TOMORROW!!!!!
We cancelled ours about 4 months ago and never look back. We watch all of our shows on Netflix. He only really watches college ball and Chiefs and Royals and there are ways to watch them online. So we hook the laptop to the tv to watch it on the big screen, pretty easy. And if there are games that we can't find, he has an impromptu guys night at buffalo wild wings! I was raised without cable television so it wasn't a big deal to me...We've been without cable for well over a year! We went through withdrawal at first, but stayed on the wagon and here we are. Today, I don't miss it at all! Between Hulu, Netflix, three gaming systems (if you count the DS), and the internet, we are plenty entertained! We also do more things like play board games and, you know, talk to each other. Who knew? lolWe've never had cable TV and don't feel like we're missing anything. It seems like we never have time or the desire to watch TV anyway. Remember National Screen Free Week is coming up April 18-24 -- sponsored by the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood. http://www.commercialfreechildhood.org/screenfreeweek/index.htmlI'm totally ready to get rid of cable, except that I love TCM. However, I've managed to find a lot of classic movies on Netflix and Hulu, so I don't think I'd miss much if we got rid of it. Just wondering how we'll get Internet if we give up cable, though. Yeah, I'm behind. We cut cable about 1 year ago & use Hulu & netflix. Amazon offers free streaming if you are a Prime member; however, between the two, Netflix has more selection. We do not use a Roku box - kids use their Wii & we use either an old desktop that is hooked up to the main TV or my laptop. We haven't had cable for about 2 years and don't miss it one bit. We have Tivo, which I think does about the same as Roku. I like streaming Netflix, and the ability to record shows. DH has figured out how to manage without all his football. That was our holdup, and it's been a non-issue.I guess I am really technology challenged because I don't even know what a Roku box is. We have cable/internet/phone with Comcast which I like most of the time (nothing is perfect and I probably don't need to watch it as much as I do anyways) plus and we have a Playstation II so we still rent movies. My computer isn't in any shape to livestream movies and my TV is too old for it. We were cable free for about five years after I was divorced because it was an expense I couldn't justify and I didn't miss it at all, though I like cable for being able DVR some shows that I would miss when I am out.We cut to the "lifeline" of Time Warner, just to make sure we had reception. It's been very hard for my husband because of sports, but the rest of us have been just fine. I'd love to toss it completely. Anything I want to watch is on the main tv stations. Even with the cut to basic, we still pay $65+ for internet and tv reception per month. Sigh.
