Both heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time
As I wrote before, our house has been hit by multiple plagues over the last two weeks. You name it, we had it. Call it a welcoming present from the new “School.”
Flu
Pink Eye
Stomach Flu
Fever
Ear infections
Sore throat
Cold
Sinus infection
Headaches
The three of us have been under our own house arrest without any visitors. I jokingly Facebooked that I was amazed our family could go through a full box of Sudafed without making Meth. Niko has gone to the doctor’s office twice. One week of amoxicillin and now Pink Eye drops. (Which is a barrel of fun to try to get into a two year-old’s eyes.)
On Thursday night, we honestly thought he was on the mend. We put him into his bed and he started crying pretty loud. At first I just though he was mad about going to bed, but he kept crying. DH and I went upstairs to check on him and saw him sitting in a pile of puke. Gross.
The real tragedy is that he threw up on his beloved “baby.” Crap. Anything but that. Niko has had his teddy bear since he was 3 weeks old. It’s everything to him. He goes everywhere with it, it’s his “lovely.”
As you can see from the photo, it was a long, long two hours. He tried and tried to open the door, to save his “baby” from the torture of the giant spinning machine. Eventually, he sat down and cried himself to sleep on my lap as we watched the “baby” spin around in the washer.
I bought a replacement “baby” during another “baby” mishap, and it has been rejected. The clean and nice version of the much-loved original sits in the corner of our living room. Every now and again he will pick it up as if it’s an oddity to be there. In a pinch it may work, but it would be a tough sell.
My relationship with the “baby” is polarized. I love it because it’s his safety blanket when I can’t be there for him, and I hate it when it’s missing or incapacitated. I’m not even sure how long toddlers are in the “lovely” stage… should I reserve a spot for the “lovely” at his high school graduation? Our son's "lovey" sits plastic-encased in cedar chest, resting in peace. Asked him this past summer if he's ready to let it go. "No." 25 yrs and "No." Glad he dates without it.Fortunately, my kids never latched on to anything. They were happy with whatever was around. Tip for giving children eye drops -- Lay their head on your lap and have them close their eyes. Place the amount of drops in the corner of the eye (closest to the nose) and when they open their eyes, the drops disperse like magic.... I guess the only problem would be getting and keeping their eyes closed. --That photo is great! Anguish! But that's great he's got attachment to a comfortable item. Neither of my daughters had a special blankie.DD's blankie--actually a crib sheet--is translucent from washing. It resides in the top drawer of her dresser. If she someday gets married I'll stitch a hankie from it.Oh both of my kids have those kind of toys, luckily they both accepted the double (triple in one case) and don't mind the washing part as long as they can help them "take a bath"! Hope everyone gets to feeling better!!Hilarious photo! My son had a "blankie" that he carried around for about three years. My aunt told me that a couple of her boys were still so attached to their blankies when they started kindergarten that she clipped a portion of the blanket and put it in their jeans pockets for comfort! I have a photo of my son with his blanket when it was still shiny and new, and my plan is to create a framed scrapbook-type page featuring the photo and scraps of the actual blanket framing it.My son still sleeps with his "baby", and he's 8! He knew the difference pretty early on between his lovey and the lovey's substitute. He would accept Lovey 2 only for short periods of time. They eventually became "Dirty Baby" and "Clean Baby". Luckily, Clean Baby looks enough like what the original stuffy is supposed to be that we'll probably put it in a shadow box eventually. And the picture is awesome, too. Poor little guy!My daughter had her snuggly and cat until she was about 10. I was actually more heartbrokem when she decided to stow away her lovies. My daughter idolizes her cousin, who is three years older. When he outgrew Pikachu, he gave her his beloved stuffed Pikachu. She is 11' and she still sleeps with the thing. I have done major surgery on it (especially after our dog got hold of it), and it is skanky. But there is no replacing it. our neighbor, who is an autho, even memorialized Isabella's love of her Pikachu a book of short stories she wrote. The worst of his injuries I sewed up with a golden thread.I still have mine.....35 years later! :). I lost a more favored one when I was about five, and I remember being heartbroken so I made sure to be very careful with the one I still had. DD has 3 that she's really attached to and regularly sleeps with. I'm thinking of buying duplicates and switching them out regularly so that both copies wear the same, just in case.
