I feel terrible!!!
We have officially started (big air quotes) “School.” I use the air quotes because I am unsure how you can bill anything for a 2-year-old as school. We found a small non-denominational school in the northland for Niko to attend.
I attended private school my whole life for both the Christian message and the fact that we lived in a TERRIBLE school district. (By terrible, I mean they had metal detectors when I was in High School… in 1990. If you ever see ANY Chicago street gang documentary, they will mention East Aurora High.)
This school used to go all the way up to High School graduation, but due to the economic downturn, they now only go to the first grade. For now, it totally works for us.
Niko is starting to get used to going to school. DH had a hard time dropping him off the first week, lots of tears. We had prepared for it… well, I had. DH drops Niko off in the mornings and I get to be the hero who picks him up. (Man, do I love this arrangement!)
Last week was Niko’s second week at school. The first couple of days went well, Niko was starting to get used to the new place and the post-drop-off meltdowns were easing.
Then it happened.
Everyone told me that new daycare means new germs.
I picked up Niko up early on Wednesday and I saw the booger trail. The I’m-going-to-wipe-my-nose-with-my-sleeve-all-the-way-to-my-ear trail. Gross. Niko woke up from his nap really grump and with one eye kinda puffy. Great. It’s Snowmaggedon outside and we need to go to the doctor tomorrow.
I really didn’t think anything about him being sick. I made the doctor's appointment for the puffy eye more than anything - I thought he was getting pink eye.
Turns out he has a double ear infection, double eye infection and they tested him for pneumonia! He didn't have pneumonia, but I was shocked that the doctor was even concerned about it.
Seriously??!?!? We had NO idea he was that sick. He was grumpy and laying around, but he certainly didn’t act like that sick! I sat in the doctor’s office and felt like “Mom of the Year.” How could I not have known he was that sick?
Niko has never been that sick before (I realize we are VERY lucky) so it caught me off guard. It’s been a LONG, LONG weekend of tears, whine and boogers, but now that we are on day 4 of amoxicillin Niko is perking up. Thank goodness for modern pharmaceuticals. What a difference!
I’m sure that this is the first of many illnesses Niko will be bringing home from school. What’s the nastiest thing that your kids picked up from daycare/school?Mine have had everything, from chicken pox to pinkeye to the common cold. The worst, however, was head lice. Seriously. It took me four months to get rid of that vermin, and we had to shave Drama Princess's head. Thank goodness she was only four! Sounds like you're doing all the right things, but don't panic if/when he gets sick at school. It's gonna happen, and it's much easier to address when they're little and can't verbally abuse you. :)Glad that he is starting to feel a little better! Being sick sucks! And when you know where it comes from it is even worse! But if you look on the bright side he will be gaining immunities and may be better able to fight things off in the future! :)Don't feel bad, sometimes that sicky stuff comes on quick! It is definetely one of the pitfalls of school or daycare. Hope he feels better soon!I'm glad he is feeling better. Unfortunately a large group of small children is simply a large pool of germs waiting to get passed around. This can play havoc with your work schedule when your child becomes too ill to go to daycare. Have you ever thought about getting an au pair? An au pair stays at your home and provides child care. Au pairs are part of a federal exchange program. It can be a great affordable alternative to day care. Several of my friends had au pairs and it was fantastic. We were pretty lucky--the biggest illness was Swine flu which was contracted at a Bat Mitzvah. Hope he feels better and that you have plenty of hand sanitizer handy! We have good friends who's child has been in daycare for a year now and is constantly sick. They have used up all of their vacation days already from all of the days they have stayed home with him.My daughter started daycare the first week of December and since then has had Strep throat, a cold, a sinus infection and the stomach flu..in that order. It has been a total disaster! To top it off, I am 10 weeks pregnant and she is sharing these ailments with me which has has about done me in. The strep infection was thankfully easily treated with antibiotics, but the on-going sinus infection would not clear up because the antibiotics they chose to use were making her vomit. When we finally found something she was tolerating, 3 days into it she came down with the stomach virus...I do believe I am traumatized by the vomiting episodes! My first experience as a mom with a sick toddler was a doozy for sure. I am REALLY hoping that this is not what is in store for us in cold/flu seasons to come, but I have a feeling that my wishes are unrealistic! Oh, and the phone calls from daycare to come and pick her up when I am the only one at work? I wince before looking at the caller ID these days!!
