You have got to be kidding me!!! $10!!!! For this TINY bag?!??!
I know it sounds awful, but I hate school/boy & girl scouts/sports fundraiser season.
“Would you like to buy some candy bars/popcorn/cookie dough/trashbags/magazines/soup mix for my kid’s _____________ ?”
Oh man… I really wish I had been at lunch when you came around with that sign up sheet. I HATE this. It’s one thing when I have to buy this EXPENSIVE, useless garbage for my own nieces & nephews, but when I’m corned at home or at the office… arggg…
I really don’t need any more sweets/popcorn/trashbags/magazines/terrible pre-packaged food items in my life. When my sister calls for this yearly fleecing, I tell her just donate that food or for her to eat it. I don’t want it in my house. I’m fat enough without guilt school/boy & girl scouts/sports fundraiser purchases.
What I really hate is that I can’t just make a cash donation to the school/boy & girl scouts/sports organization in that kid’s name and be done with it because it doesn’t count toward whatever lame prize they are offering the kids for selling their wares.
The only people that really make money on these deals are the companies that run these fundraisers. That’s probably what ticks me off so much about them.
Case in point… Take a look at that TINY bag of caramel popcorn bad up top. One of my neighbors’ kids came to my door selling popcorn for Boy Scouts. He asked if I could help his troop by buying some popcorn or sponsoring a scout for $25. Ouch!!!!
I looked through the catalog and saw that the cheapest thing was the bag of caramel corn so that’s what I bought. I bought it weeks ago, and it finally showed up on Wednesday.
I must say I was pretty disappointed. Wow, really? I had expected it to be small, but not smaller-than-a-small-chip-bag, small.
Am I alone here? Who else hates these things? As much as I hate the fundraising, I help my boys sell the scout popecorn. Why? Well, scout camp, 10 days worth of hot, sweaty fun, costs almost $300. Two boys, well the math is easy. The money they make selling that popcorn helps a little. I understand though, if people say no. I have to say no when I get asked sometimes. It is the way it is.I hate when there isn't at least a 5-7 dollar option. Like you, I don't want to shell out 20+ bucks for something I don't need/want anyway. We have the $10 bag of popcorn as well! I really thought I would get more for my $10, but nope, just 1 bag. At least it doesn't taste that bad!I'm going to sound biased (and w/ two girl scouts in my house, I am), but at least the Girl Scout cookies are only $3.50 a box. I have a hard time saying no to my neighborhood boy scouts, but their stuff really is expensive!!! I don't know how much the boys keep off of their wares, but since I've been the cookie mom for several years, I do know the breakdown on what the girls make. Our troop keeps just over 50 cents a box and our service unit keeps more than that and they do put on cool events and camps, so I won't argue that. I don't really want to be asked at work either, but if someone leaves a sign-up sheet in the lunchroom or whatever, I sometimes buy.I'm with you, Kim! I absolutely hate fund-raisers for anything other than legitimate charities. Sports teams, schools, etc. are NOT charities. Schools get my tax money and don't need all the fancy high-tech stuff they buy with the fundraising money, and I really couldn't care less if all youth sports vanished tomorrow. I do participate in fundraising from time to time as both a seller and a buyer, but I do as little as I can get away with. I'm really only interested in supporting this kind of thing if the money goes directly to something like camp scholarships for kids who otherwise couldn't afford to go.which is why I'm grateful that neither of my kids' sports teams do "sell stuff" fundraisers. Older kid's team parents work at Chiefs games, younger kid's team hosts stuff like poker tournaments and softball tournaments. Hey, at least at the poker tournament I walked away with some prizes :)You should complain to the powers that be at work. Many companies won't allow it anymore, b/c it turns into too much. Every day someone's selling something. It's ridiculous. Plus, as a parent who can't sell their kids' stuff at work...I've always found it a little unfair that the kids who get all the Big Rewards (there was a fundraiser at our school last year where the winning kids got to take a limo ride out for a pizza lunch!) didn't do jack squat to earn it. Their parents took their crap to work and guilted people into it. Yeah, let's reward THAT!As a general rule, I hate fund raisers. I always buy girl scout cookies however - and even before I had a son in scouts i bought popcorn - starting with my brothers and continuing with co-workers kids. The popcorn is expensive - buy so is being in scouts and the boys personally get to keep 30% of what they sell. That money goes into their passbook that pays for rechartering fees and also for camp. However, I'm never offended if I ask, and someone says no.I buy only if it's something I really want. Otherwise, I don't have any problem saying No. My daughter's Rainbow assembly sells things every once in a while, so the girls get a chance to go to Grand Assembly and Supreme Assembly. But as a rule the girls are expected to sell that stuff themselves--sometimes the parents help out but I do NOT do the bulk of the selling for her! And this is the first year I have not bought GS cookies. I buy only from my attorneys' kids, and they apparently aren't selling them this year, which is not to say that eight bazillion other parents here haven't offered them. I don't need them, so I just passed them up this year. Plus, I realize they are "only" $3.50 a box, but I still think that's an awful lot of money for no more cookies than you get. Personally, I don't like the BS popcorn, so I've never bought it more than once.I hear you on all counts...and I've been the parent on the other side. Still am in some cases. If there is an option for me to donate, I do. Who needs all this stuff? (Thankfully the school cookie dough fundraiser gives us an option as a family to just write a check - although we have to pony up way more than the equivalent proceeds from the "suggested" sales...).Boy Scouts are the worst! I told my husband not to buy from them again. I think he spent $20 on some microwave popcorn. WTH? Clearly we know who does and does not do the grocery shopping at my house. I will say someone at work had a good one. I bought a french silk pie for like $10. A price I would pay at any store for the same item.
