My little man turns two this week. Wow… time really does move as fast as they say it does. I remember when the pregnancy strip showed two pink lines and our adventure began.
I have written before about my leeriness to give Niko the MMR shot. I know it sound silly, but it still does worry me. I know there have been no official finding between MMR and Autism (the old findings were thrown out), but just the whisper of it frightens me.
I told myself that I would give Niko the MMR shot when he turned two. That day is here now and I hope everything goes well this Friday. I am amazed how many vaccinations children get in the US before the age of three. It’s mind-blowing, really. I don’t even know how many he will get on his doctor’s visit but I would guess no fewer that three and no more than five.
I just hope that we don’t wind up in the emergency room again… the chicken pox made Niko break out in a nasty case of hives. After a week of steroids he was fine, but paying an emergency room co-pay did not make me a very happy camper.
There are many perks to having a two-year-old verses an infant when it comes to modern pharmaceuticals. We will be able to give him children’s medicine instead of infant’s medicine… ahhhh… and it’s cheaper to boot.
The BIGGEST perk of all is that his childcare bill will go down by $160 a month! It’s like we won the lotto!!!! Now we just need to get working on potty-training the little man. It would be great to save money on diapers too…
Any tips on potty training? I will probably be blogging about that adventure in the near future, but I would love to hear how exactly you go about doing that little trick….I'm the laziest potty-trainer on the board. It's starting to look like DS (3) might go to high school in pull-ups. He just doesn't care. Incentives, praise, scorn, shame, he just gives a mocking (yet somehow still charming) smile & goes about his business.I wouldn't rush potty training, esp. with boys. We waited until our son was 3 to start, and he did a wonderful job! His daycare provider really got the brunt of it, but we also waited until he said he was ready to wear his big boy underwear! It worked for us!What until Niko is ready!! DS was almost 4 before he decided he wanted to potty train and DD did it about 1 week after she turned 3. (Both kids did on their own without having to have a parent trained to ask them every 30 minutes if they have to go.) We tried earlier with DS because "that is what you are supposed to do" but it wasn't for him and all it really did was frustrate DH and myself!! He will do it when he is ready!I vividly recall our PAT gal telling me that it's usually the parent that's potty-trained (to pick up on their child's cues) not the child that is potty trained if you potty train under 2. Physiologically just not ready yet. I'd agree, the old belief that they have to be potty trained right at 2 is often simply frustrating for all parties involved. My girls were 2 years, 9 months and 2 1/2. My son wore his last diaper the day of his 3rd birthday, slept in one that night, and never wore another one. By day 3, he was accident-free, and slept without pull-ups w/in a week or two. He was older so it was easier and he was more able to participate and understand what we were trying to accomplish, I'm convinced. All three of mine were pretty easy, but he was actually the easiest. It doesn't have to be frustrating and since I was a fulltime SAHM at the time, I committed to literally staying at home for several days so we wouldn't have to throw a diaper or pullup back on to run errands and fall back into the habit of going in those instead of the toilet. I also got super lucky w/ DS because he was tall for his age and could get on the toilet so we didn't have to use a yucky potty seat. He taught himself to pee standing up a couple months after he was potty trained, so I guess that must be hardwired into boy brains!LOLI just finished potty training my girls. They were almost 3 when we started. We let them run around naked for a few days. Trust me, it will be messy the first day. It clicked on the second day and they would run to the potty. We used stickers as incentives to use the potty. A few weeks after potty training, I noticed they would stay dry at night, so I put away the night time pull-ups and put them in panties. Now they are fully potty trained - even at night. We have had a handful of accidents and those are always met with tears and shame on their part. I just reassure them that sometimes accidents happen. Overall it was fairly easy. Good Luck!My sons didn't really start potty training until they were closer to three. My girls were a little sooner, but as I am finding with just about everything, girls seem to do things a little quicker than the boys. When you decide he is ready to potty train, take 2-3 and focus on just that. It works best to stay at home that entire time as much as you can, and 3 day weekends are great because it gives you that extra day. I potty trained our little guy on the weekend after New Year's Eve. The first day is rough, but like others have said, the second or third day it suddenly clicks. Good luck!
