My parents are coming to visit for Memorial Day Weekend. I can’t wait to see them, but the weeks leading up to their visits are always stressful.
In college, I was a total slob. There. I said it. My parents often remind me about how they still have nightmares about my old college apartment. I must admit… it was pretty trashed when they helped me move. I hadn’t really cleaned/packed before they came to help me move… I had too much work (partying) to do!
Every since that visit, I have been trying to clear my name. That visit was over 12 years ago and I am still trying to have my record wiped clean.
DH dreads how neurotic I get before a visit. In the last month, we have stripped wallpaper, installed new light fixtures and repainted two bathrooms, cleaned out the garage, and cleaned and organized the basement.
I really want to clean the carpets before Friday… but I don’t know if I have it in me. I’m pretty beat from all the work we have already done.
I still have the Meth cleaning to do, that’s what DH calls it. I break out the toothbrush and get scrubbing. You can literally eat off the bathroom floor when I am done. The whole process takes me a couple of days – this is what the rest of my week looks like. Ugh.
Does anyone else get like this when their parents come to visit? More importantly… does anyone want to help!I wouldn't go to any extra effort to clean house for a visit from my mom ... But my in-laws, that's another matter.I try to do some stuff daily so it doesn't pile, but I haven't deep cleaned (tooth brush style) for a while. Maybe, it's time to hire a cleaning person prior to a visit so you are more relaxed?Oh my gosh! That is SO SO true in our house. But instead of it being for my parents, it is about my DH's parents, now just mom. This neurotic behavior has been kind of forced upon me by DH who I swear would have me burn down the house and build a new one before she visits so that everything is new and perfect. We too have the paint every room in the house so there are no fingerprints, scratches, along with make sure she has 600+ thread count sheets to sleep on and the softest towels for her bathroom syndrome. But, to top it off, my DH used the money MY dad gave us for our 15th anniversary to buy me a carpet cleaner so that I could make sure the carpet was spotless before she came this last weekend. I swear my DH is trying to kill me, and I swear that she comes to visit with the white gloves on, just waiting to find dust :-OThere's no way I could live like that. My in-laws live a stone's throw from us, and we do try to pick up and do a little dusting and vacuuming before they come over, but for the most part, how we live is how we live. I'm a TERRIBLE housekeeper and pretty much everyone I know is aware of it. I don't think I've violated any health codes, but if there is a little dust on my piano, I don't lose sleep over it. The way I see it is if you're more interested in the way my house is kept than in visiting with me, then we can meet someplace else.I'm not that anal about it, but if company is coming, vacuuming, dusting, and clean kitchen and bathroom will be seen.My husband thinks I get out of control when we have family over for any kind of event, like birthdays, etc. I do go a little nutso, like cleaning the top of the fridge and cleaning rooms people won't even see. I'm trying harder to make sure I clean better more often and keep the clutter picked up so that I don't have to get ballistic every time I have company.
