You actually thought this lolly-pop was going to work?!?
My baby is growing up so fast.
I have been putting off Niko’s first haircut because so many people told me to. They warned me that when you cut little boy’s hair, they stop looking like your baby and start looking like your toddler.
They were right. I can’t believe how much older Niko looks – it was definitely a bittersweet experience.
I would have put it off a bit longer, but Niko was called a girl at Aids Walk so I figured it was time.
I underestimated how difficult the actual haircut would be. I thought I had the perfect plan, I would have Amber (a family friend) cut Niko’s hair at her salon. Niko sees Amber almost every day at daycare so I thought this would be a no big deal event… I was way wrong.
As soon as we went to the chair, Niko grabbed my hand and headed for the door. I got him in the chair and the show began… crying, screaming, crying. I tried to bribe him with a lolly-pop, but he wasn’t having it. Scream, wiggle and cry.
I’m glad to have his haircut done, but the process sucked. I hope his hair grows slowly so we don’t have to have it done very often. Secretly, miss his curly baby-mullet, but I don’t miss the knots and tears that came with combing it out.
Any suggestions on how to make the process a bit easier for round two?
Sedation. Just kidding. Any shows that he likes to watch? Some kids will be still for things if their favorite show is on.My 3 year old loves playing with a squirt bottle while he gets his hair cut! I am very fortunate that the girl who cuts my hair works out of her home and also cuts my son's hair too. So she just hands him her water/squirt bottle and he goes to town squirting the floor. It's a little wet but it makes for a much more pleasant experience for everyone involved!Can he sit on your lap? That worked for at least one of my boys when they were little. But I had the same problem as you did - lots of running around the salon and screaming and hiding. Sigh. But I promise - they outgrew it!I took mine to a regular salon once. Only once. The screaming was enough to make me want to pay the extra $ for Sheer Madness. The kids are so busy looking at the car and watching Dora that they sit still for the haircut. Well, mostly but not all the time. The people that work there are really good with kids and reassuring them that everything is ok. You might want to give it a try.
