In the next few weeks, I will be starting a new job.
To be honest, taking this new position was the hardest career decision of my life. I LOVE my job, but my organization is just too unstable. In the past two years there have been several RIFs (Reduction In Force) layoffs and more are scheduled in the next few months.
I just couldn’t put my family through that stress any more. The constant worry was really starting to take a toll on us.
This career move is bittersweet for me. My new position is a promotion, but it comes at a time we were going to start trying for baby #2. It’s kind of ironic - I am taking this job for my family, but I have to put my family on hold for the new job. Catch 22.
The perfect solution would be if my husband could get pregnant.
Why do you say? (Aside from the obvious reasons…) I don’t qualify for FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) protection until I complete my first year of employment with my new organization.
I’m terrified of getting pregnant without it.
In my opinion, getting pregnant right now is a gamble for any woman with or without FMLA protection. Most companies are aggressively “right-sizing” and being pregnant makes more of a target.
Does anyone else think like this? Maybe I am just too jaded...
Has anyone else changed your timeline for a baby because of a new job or the economic downturn?
I have two friends that got jobs (one in non-profit, one in for-profit) while pregnant. Both disclosed and it did not hinder them in the process. One of them started her position this month and is expecting over the summer. The other delivered this week and will be starting by June. So, if you have the right skill set and talents and work for the right kind of company, pregnancy is not an issue (nor is FMLA a concern).I wish my husband could get pregnant because I don't enjoy being pregnant. HA! I actually did the exact same thing you are doing a little over two years ago. Although FMLA doesn't start for a year, you are pregnant for 9-10 months so technically you don't need it for almost a year. I didn't love the idea of starting a new job and then getting pregnant not long after and then telling them I would be gone for three months. But it all worked out. The new job was less stress and more stable which I think helped make my pregnancy eaiser too. Your awesome work will speak for itself.
