I don’t know about you… but I have had my fill of driving in the snow/ice this year. I sat in my living room this weekend watching the snow come down and wondering if I was going to be able to make it to work on Monday.
I drive a tiny car – a Volkswagen Golf to be specific. I love my car’s great gas mileage and small size. I need a car that will fit into the tiny downtown KC parking spaces. What I don’t love the way small cars handle in the snow/ice. My car just isn’t heavy enough to navigate slick roads.
I have never liked driving in bad weather, but after having Niko I hate it even more. When I wake up in the morning and look out my window and decide if I will risk a car accident so I can go to work.
I hate this decision.
This decision was easier before Niko. I never really thought twice about it, but after having my son I hate it even more.
Weren’t we supposed to have flying cars by now? A flying car would make my daily winter commute easier. States and Cities would no longer have to use resources on roads or interstates and our neighborhoods would instantly become park-like settings.
Ohhh to dream…
To tell you the truth, I would settle for being able to telecommute on days like these. Aren’t we supposed to be able to do that by now??
Am I the only one who struggles with this? How do you balance your career with the elements…..especially in THIS economy?
I am home right now with my youngest, but I used to struggle with this same issue with my oldest. Sometimes the decisions are impossible and it comes down to which the decision upsets the least amount of people (i.e. your family and co-workers). Maybe carpooling with a friend who has 4 wheel who works near you? You could split the gas or pay them back by doing some of the driving during nicer weather. Some people commute to bus stops and take those into the city. Even four wheel drive cars are not totally equiped for ice and many low profile versions bottom out in snow (My Pacifica has all wheel drive, but high drifts are lost cause). It would be nice to have a subway system to help remedy some of these woes, but this would open another can of worms. Just to note, some women find the cost of gas, childcare, time, and other unforseen frustrations (i.e. back up babysitter, when day care is close. Since most of those charge a flat rate, whether your child is present or not-you pay to "hold your spot.") end up costing them more money then they are actually making. Good luck and safe travels.No, I don't like to drive in the bad weather, but if I can make it off of my street then I go to work. I can't stand the thought of wasting all of my vacation days on bad weather or receive discipline at work because of missing too many days.Darned ole Star Wars for getting us all worked up and thinking we would have those hover craft thingies in the future
